My car (same -- 2002 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.2 engine) just started doing the same exact thing, out of nowhere -- running very rough and the Service Engine Soon light and Trac Off (Traction Control System) lights both came on -- no acceleration hardly at all -- I had it scanned at the Auto Store and they said it was a dead spark plug! So this answer should be what you're looking for Wendy!

First off you have to get a OBD2 reader, can be borrowed from autozone, usually you gotta take the car there to use it.

From there you can see if there is a problem with the PCM - trans shifting, fuel pump problems, or if you are having firing problems as stated above.

Does your "Service Engine Soon" light come up? If it does get a repair man to read the code.

Have you driven the car for about 150,000Km? then it could very well be that one or two of your spark plugs have stopped firing. You need to get that spark plug replaced. Remember, when replacing spark plugs, it is adviced that you should replace all of them at once.

You probably have a dead cylinder. like if you have a six cylinder it might be running on only five. could be because of a bad spark plug, ignition coil, fuel injector, plug wire. you should get it checked out.

2002 grand prix runs rough, dies service engine

sounds like you have a vacuum leak, check all the vacuum hoses and replace any broken or kinked ones, also check around the intake manifold gasket for leaks. any air leaks after the air flow meter creates 'un-metered' air which inturn will make the car run rough and stall, hope this helps

Check the ignition control module. Sounds like the exact same problem I have had with mine. Took it to the dealership and the were able to tell me right away. The ignition control module is very easy to replace and is located on the top of the valve cover. Hope this helps!
