If I understand the problem, you turn the key, you hear the starter engage, but the engine itself does not turn over. You might want to check the baterry connections.

If I understand the problem, you turn the key, you hear the starter engage, but the engine itself does not turn over. Sounds like the gear that connects the starter to the fly wheel may be damaged. To check, remove the starter and inspect the end with the gear for any teath missing or damaged.

Will a bad starter have my car not turning over??

  • Hi, I can help.

  • If the starter malfunctions the car won't start period. The bendix has to engage the flywheel at a certain RPM. Sometimes you get no response out of a starter and other times it cranks but not near fast enough. So the answer to your question is yes, a bad starter can prevent your engine from cranking/turning over.

Need replacement ignition key for my 1987

A 1987 does not have the theft prevention chip in the key, so yes, you can. In case it is a 1997, you need the chipped key to start the vehicle. This would have to be aquired from the dealer.
