Question about 1993 Subaru Legacy
I bought a 1993 lagacy from this guy down the street for $450 best investment ever for a college kid the thing is bullet proof besides the oil leak and cv axles... about 1 year ago my reverse and 5th gear both stopped working and everyone i talk to tells me something different so basically ive just been using it in 4th and thinking about where i park.
So whats wrong? Obviouly im not going to spend $500 when i only payed $450. It is a 5th speed Manual thats beat to hell 240,000miles but its all i got so dont offer by a new car im broke. I drove the car for a while almost bone dry on gear oil that could have attributed to the failure of the reverse.
Hullo there.what it would be best to do Ol son is replace the gearbox,four bolts into the EJ20,undo yur speedo drive , slave cylinder off leave it hanging about attached to the fluid line still(actuates the clutch) .unbolt the half shaft(drive shaft,front half).UNPLUG THE REVERSE LIGHT CONNECTOR FROM THE BOX.AND THERE ARE PINS (one each side)in the half shafts that connect th front axles to the front differential.They need to be driven out with a hammer & fat nail or a pin punch if yu got one. get a manual and its so easy. these pins go thru th in side of th inner CV joints.yuh hafta turn the axle till yu see th pin. Shove in the new used box,and bolt that stuff back to it ...se yu on th freeway! THE REASON why? any damage inside,metal fragments,debris is doing damage inside your gearbox to bearings.gears,bronze synchro rings .so forth while it is rotating the internal parts!!!!! so failing th supply of a recon.gearbox a second hand one may do it a fix.Know this...eventually there will be a total collapse of the gear function in th box yu currently use and we cant say if it will last 1 mile or another 240,000 miles in all honesty.What you do know is however cheap it was; you can either move it on to another owner or get it fixed the cheapest yu can or put up with the missing gears. Inside th box is as simple and methodical as all the other work described but requires your understanding and a suitable work space.and replacement parts that may individually cost as muchas a S/H gearbox.MOST PROBABLE THAT THE REVERSE/O.D. IDLER GEAR HAS PARTED BETWEEN THE GEAR.If you get all of that out it could be welded and restored. That is a heavy thing to let down from under th car too so be careful about HOW all things are supported if you D.I.Y. including the 1,300 kg weight its bolted into..(2860 Ib) GOOD LUCK.

I think the problem is most likely in the shift linkage, manyually shift it into reverse at the trans (bypass shifter) and see if it goes in, is the shifter loose or has allot of play?
