I have the same condition. I have been told by a very good mechanic that I trust that the problem is the torque converter itself. It is locking up and unlocking when it should not. We found that if we raised the front end of the car off the ground, the tires would start spinning even though it was in park. In this case the converter was engaged. It is not clear if just changing the converter will solve the problem, but that is what we are going to try.

Have a 98 Olds Bravada it has a noise coming from rear of engine on the passenger side. Dealership said it was possible a transmission issue. I think differently, b/c the noise is at park or drive.

Depends on the noise. Tapping or knocking is rod bearings, engine side. Whining is the transmission side. Torque converter, pump, and parts further inside the transmission.

Nocking sound

OK let's do a little check. with the car in a clear area and no kid's or anyone around the car get in and start the engine. Now do you hear the noise with the car sitting at an idle.Let's say yes then put your foot on the brake and put the car in gear do you hear the knock if so hold the brake secure make sure no one is in front of the car and apply the gas lightly if the noise stop's then you have a loose torque converter to flywheel the bolt's are not tight..Now if you hear the knock and it's high pitch metallic then chance's are it's a rod or lifter in the engine. If the noise is a thumping dull noise you have a bad crankshaft. My guess is the torque converter because you said the transmission was worked on and a lot of time's without Loctite and the proper tourque the converter bolt's will work loose.GOOD LUCK HOPE THIS HELP'S

The reason why your vehicle is making a knocking noise is probably because your valves need adjusting.

Loud whine then knock in overdrive

well, without hearing the noise myself, i could guess that the torque converter clutch might be going bad. the torque converter is the part that transfers the power from the engine to the transmission via viscous fluid motion, the converter also has a clutch that internally provides a direct connection inside the converter for better fuel economy. but as with anything labeled as a clutch, it wears down to a point where is slips. the noise your hear could be the torque converter clutch slipping. i owned a 90 astro van with the same drivetrain that made a noise similar to what you speak of up hills. while driving up hills, fully depress the accelerator and if the clunking noise occurs, then the whine goes away as you accelerate faster in a lower gear, very likely this is the case. you would have to have a transmission shop diagnose further. i drove that old van for five more years cause i didn't want to pay to have transmission repaired. it can be very expensive.

Time for a visit to a transmission shop for a proper diagnosis. Sorry, but if you do it now, it may save money in long run.
