Loud mechanical knock in engine 2.8 a4 Audi 1996

I have a loud mechanical knock in engine, but on inspection of the bigends they are fine. Any ideas of what else it can be....

Thanks for trying, as I have stated the connecting rods were fine. What I found was one of the six butterfly's in the inlet manifold came loose and the little screw were sucked into the cylinder and that caused the loud metal knocking in the engine.

It's probably a rod knocking and that's never too good. get it checked out with a mechanic soon. Some auto parts sell stuff to stop that so you can go there and ask they usually help you, but it won't solve the problem it will just stop the noise for a little bit.

I've changed my engine mounts 3 times on my 2004 A4 cabreolet and they fail within miles(start to vibrate & then within a week, severe knocking) the 2nd time, also changed the ****** mount, 3r

Engine mounts do not go bad in five miles. Sounds like you're treating a symptom and not the cause of a more serious issue. Are you sure all cylinders are firing correctly? That the severe knocking is not coming from your engine internals? Have you checked the steel around the engine mounting points for cracks or other damage? And just in case, if the mounts you are using are poly, are you lubing them before installation?

06 A4 2.0t and the engine sounds like a diesel

It may be a lifter tick, HOPEFULLY not a rod knock. However you would not need a brand new engine if either of those were the case. If you find someone that can rebuild the engine, that may or may not be cheaper depending on the dealer and parts that need to be replaced. It could also be the timing belt. The shop told you to wait for a check engine light because they dont know what's wrong with it, without plugging it into their computer. But you should NOT ignore it. Hope this helps.

ThenI start my engine it sounds like diesel and no power

how is the oil level and pressure?, how many miles on engine? is this a loud knock or rather a clatter/ticking noise? knock is engine rod or crankshaft bearings, clatter loud ticking is valve follower noise. how long before it (the noise) goes away?

It's the wheel bearing. Guaranteed. Just replaced mine. Go to Audiworld tech articles for step by step instructions on how to test the wheel bearings. They must have been put in wrong last time or they just went out again.

Knocking when first start engine

Depending on the period of time and intensity of the knock ? If it is a rapid short ,loud knock then disappears altogether you may be dealing with a cam chain tensioner that is loosing oil pressure when the car is standing. A loose cambelt tensioner can increase the noise .
