First sign of low coolant. You don't have enough coolant in your car to either cool the engine or run it through the heater core.

Add coolant. If that doesn't work, the thermostat is your next stop. Good luck.

Hi i bought 2002 nissan sentra ..previous owner replaced head gasket ,water pump.thermostat ...car was running good for a week then sudeny no hot air inside(blows but cold) and 10 minutes later...

Thermostat is the wrong temperature range for the vehicle or it is installed backwards. It is opening too soon and not allowing the vehicle engine to come up to operating temperature soon enough. Have system checked, replace thermostat with correct temperature for vehicle

Usually the problem with no heat and overheating is low coolant, thermostat, or a faulty water pump impeller.
The radiator may not be full of liquid coolant, or the pump may not be moving the coolant thru the block.

My Mazada 2000 MPV seems to be overheating when driving at a high speed or going up hill. The egine smeels hot but none of the gauges are showing as overheating.

Check coolant level. if its ok than ride. If from expansion cap coming some flush or many many coolant aut check thermostat and check cooling fan system is sensor ok and relay.

1998 2.4 stratus no heat, temp gauge showing overheating, no knocking noises yet, car seems to 'run' ok. Changed thermostat still showing same symptoms.

Is the coolant at the correct level? Any loss of coolant so you must add it (if so, how much and how often). Do you have a air bleed bolt on the engine (usually near the thermostat). This could just be air in the system, which would cause both problems you describe (running hot, no heat). How long does it take to drive it for it reach overheating zone on temp gauge?
