Question about Ford F-150

Open Question

1979 Ford F-150 with 4bbl 460. Just started idling real rough, cut off sometimes, and doesn't seem to want to shift on its own. Auto trans 3 on the tree. Vacuum line? Fuel filter? tran filter?

Truck ran perfect after I replace rotor, distributor, spark plugs/wires, air filter. Haven't gotten to fuel filter or tranny filter. Maybe these or vacuum problem?

SOURCE: installing distributor for 1979 Ford f-150 V-8 302

If the engine is cranked (disturbed) with the distributor removed, it will now be necessary to retime the engine.

  1. Rotate the engine so that No.1 piston is at TDC of the compression stroke.
  2. Align the timing marks to the correct ignition timing shown on the underhood decal.
  3. Install the distributor with the rotor in the No.1 firing position and any armature pole aligned with a stator pole.
Make sure that the oil pump intermediate shaft properly engages the distributor shaft. It may be necessary to rotate the engine after the distributor gear is partially engaged in order to engage the oil pump intermediate shaft and fully seat the distributor in the block.
  1. If it was necessary to rotate the engine to align the oil pump, repeat Steps 1, 2 and 3.
  2. Install the holddown bolt finger tight.
  3. Install the distributor cap and wires.
  4. Connect the distributor wring connector to the wiring harness. Tighten the holddown bolt.
  5. Install the air cleaner, if removed.
  6. Check the ignition timing as outlined in Section 2.
  7. When everything is set, tighten the holddown bolt to 25 ft. lbs.

SOURCE: 1996 Honda Accord Rough Idle Even After tune up

Perform a valve clearance inspection and adjust if necessary. Tight or sticking valves will cause a misfire or rough running concern. Note: Perform valve adjustment when the engine is stone cold. 4cyl: INT 0.26mm EXH: 0.30mm (V6 engine are hydraulic and no adjust necessary.) Also check for a sticking or stuck open EGR valve. For diagnostic purposes only: Remove the EGR valve. Place a business card over the EGR passage and bolt the EGR valve back on. This plugs the EGR ports and if the misfire goes away the EGR valve is partially stuck open and is defective.
Check for low fuel pressure. Check for low compression. Check cam timing. Check for a weak ignition coil. Also don't over look the possibility of worn or broken engine mounts which cause excessive engine movement and engine vibration. -hope this helps

SOURCE: I have a 95 nissan sentra and it keeps idling

Check vacuum leaks , by spraying carburator cleaner around intake manifold gasket and vacuum hoses connections . See if engine picks up the idle speed while you doing it , and if it does , locate leak and fix it. Most common , intake manifold gasket brakes.

SOURCE: I have a 1997 Mitsubishi Galant with rough idle

I am having the same issue on Mitsubishi Galant 02. Clattering on acceleration, herky jerky idle. Pulled a code multiple cylinder misfire. My mechanic's diagnosis is bad valve cover gasket causing oil to seap into the spark plugs and bad timing belt, which I have not replaced at 150k miles. I do however know my fuel injectors do need cleaning, he hasn't ruled that out either. Have you pulled any code on it? I have read on engine knock sensor going out on some of these also. Hope this helps some.

most auto trans don't shift into reverse when low. Reverse takes the most fluid of all the gears.
Check for a bad shift solenoid or wires to and from that circuit. Most trans-axles have them now.

Replace your hose going from intake to brake booster ( vacuum leak) check all other hoses also. Clean the throttle body. And a tune up probably wont hurt either.

Will stall while idling in drive and not restart right away. Jeep will seem to turn over, and RPMs rev up, then the engine dies.

no its more than likely not related to the trans,if you are having shift problems though,i would have the tps(throttle position sensor) checked out.another thing to check is the vacume lines to and from the egr valve and the valve its self for proper operation.

Well, I have a 1994 Toyota Camry XLE V6. I bought it from someone almost two years ago, knowing that it did not have reverse. When we bought it we noticed that the transmission fluid was very low to none...

if the gears were "melted together" then the trans wouldn't shift at all. since the car runs fine sometimes and sometimes it doesn't it sounds like an electronic problem. the trans uses shift solenoids to acheive gear changes. is the fluid dark brown in color or smell burnt? if so you may have some slipping of the clutch discs/ bands, but it doesn't sound severe if the car runs fine at times. i suggest you have a trans shop to drive the car and get a more accurate diagnosis.

you are right to think it is a sensor. trash can get into the shift solenoids and make a trans act funny. you could drop the pan and replace the solenoids located in the back of the valve body.

it may be a bad tps ( throttle position sensor ). it causes transmission shift issues, bucking, jerking, idle surging, engine cut off, surge while crusing down highway. if this does not solve problem, it may be a sticking valve body in transmission. have a good day !! for an automatic tranny.

did you change the coolant temp sensor and the air temp sensor. sounds more like the coolant sensor is not working right this could cause the computer to dump more fuel which would cause a rich burn and the shifting problems check the leakage on the trans. When was the last trans fluid change and filter?

Engine speed hunts on idle. Auto trans slow shift.

The fast idle valve is inside the throttle body. Sometimes it backs out and needs turned back in (it's threaded). This will cause the loping idle.

Get transmission filter changed with new fluid. Honda does not recommend transmission flushing.
