Question about 2002 Jeep Liberty

2002 V6 Jeep Liberty-Oil Pump Replacement

Has 200,000 miles. At idle the oil light comes on. Mechanic saiid oil pump is worn out. Can pump be replaced without taking engine out of car? Is it something a "shade tree" guy could do?

    I just encountered the same problem this morning. I will be looking into it. I have 164,000 miles. I will probably be hooking up a mechanical oil gauge if I can find the oil sensor. The crank and cam bearings may have excessive clearance causing the same low oil pressure problem.

    I get the low oil light, but only at hot idle in the morning when idle drops below 600-700 rpm. 131,000 miles on the clock. I sure hope its not the oil pump. Let me know what you find out about the mechanical oil pressure gauge (ie where you hooked up, cold idle pressure, hot idle, etc.)

    I have the same problem. I found the sending unit, it is above the filter. With the filter off I can reach the unit but can not see it to find out how the clip works. Any ideas? I can not pull the connector off.

    I havwe the Same Jeep liberty 2003 V6- 70000miles, oil lamp is on at idle only

Yes you have to check your pressure with a mechanical gauge first. If the pressure reading is good replace the oil pressure sending unit. They are known to go bad, and oil pumps going bad is rare.

Oil pump went out on my 05 liberty. the sending unit hook up has a red tab you have to slide over to be able to get the squeeze tab to release.

The 2GR-FE is a 3.5 L (3456 cc)

if leaks are that bad
always check the engine oil level before you drive off

fixing oil leaks on motors
degrease whole motor top and bottom

start with replacing the oil sender it may be the cause of the oil light coming on

Oil light comes on at stops after engine is warm

if your saying that your low oil pressure light is coming on (or flickering) at engine idle , but goes out when engine is above idle (going along) this is sure sign you have a problem in your engines oil pressure system :
serious !~

some common reasons for this to occur are:

worn out engine parts allowing oil to leak out and not lube parts properly (hi engine miles)

low oil level -not enough oil inside engine to get pumped around proper

restriction in oil system - blockage in oil passageways even oil filter will count (hi miles)

3.5L V6. Why does oil pressure light turn on intermittently?

1. As a basic measure I would make sure the correct grade and spec oil is going in the engine. You can no longer trust that a local mechanic or even a dealer service center will necessarily use the required product as stipulated by the manufacturer. It is always better to buy and supply your own so you know the correct product is being used.

2. I would not assume there is a problem with the oil pressure warning light even though there could be.
The first thing the mechanic should have done when you reported the oil pressure issue is to hook up an independent mechanical oil pressure gauge and check oil pressure when the engine is hot at different RPMs. Any oil pressure issue will usually show up at idle when the engine has been warmed up properly and the engine oil is hot (unless you have some kind of intermittent oil pressure relief valve that is sticking). Just replacing parts without actually knowing what the oil pressures are at different RPMs is being sloppy and negligent.
This is what you need to do now. Contact a business that can hook up their own pressure gauge to your engine and have them check the oil pressure readings at various RPMs when the engine is fully warm. If there is a low oil pressure issue it will show up on the oil pressure gauge. As you have a new oil pump there should be no issue now with oil volume or a sticking oil pressure relief valve which on your engine should be part of the oil pump assembly.

3. Worn engines will not be able to sustain required oil pressures. Oil pressure is not produced by the oil pump. The oil pump produces oil flow but the resistance to flow is what produces the oil pressure and that resistance is created by fine clearances between operating engine parts especially on the crankshaft and components connected to it. Once the engine wears the clearances increase and the oil flows past the parts much more easily and produces/builds much less pressure.
How well your engine with over 90000 miles has been maintained depends on how often all the owners changed the engine oil and filter , whether they kept the engine oil level up to full (most owners rarely ever check oil levels between services) and whether they always used the correct product. Manufacturer oil change intervals shown in service schedules can be 10000, 12000 miles or more which is much too infrequent for the type of use 95% of private vehicles experience which typically are on the severe to very severe use end of the spectrum. Engine oil typically needs to be changed at least at half the mileage shown in service books (at least twice as frequently) and thus at least every 5000 miles if you want your engine to last.

Oil light comes on if at first i start again it will go off then ok

The oil light should come on while you start the car and then when it starts, the oil light should go off.
Id it is xoming kn at any other time, you may be low on oil and need to check it and add oil as necessary. If the oil level is above the add mark you should be oK. But make sure you check it when the car has been off and idle idle long enough for the oil to drain from the engine and return to the oil pan. If it persists, it could be the oil pressure sending unit or a loose or worn electrical connection. If the light still comes on, take it to a certified mechanic for diagnosis. It could be the oil pump.

You will have to take an oil pressure reading and compare to specifications. It could be that the pick up screen is plugged. Do not drive the car as damage to engine will occur.

At high temperatures, the oil loses viscosity, and its capability to produce higher pressures. At idle, the oil pump is running slowly and has limited capacity to produce pressure. Engines in good working order are designed to operate normally under these conditions. Either your oil pump is worn out, and replacing it will solve the problem, or the engine is worn out, and incapable of holding the oil pressure. The life of a worn out engine can be extended a few thousand miles by using heavier ( a lot heavier) oils.

It could be a worn out oil pump or more serious engine problem. With 189K miles, there is a good possibility that a major overhaul may be necessary. Is this economical to do or do you opt for a replacement engine? Have a mechanic check out the oil pump first.

Still using the 5w30 oil that the manufacturer recommends.?? If the engine is a "higher" mile engine you need stronger protection. Could also be a need for plugs & wires (mis-fires). When it comes to oil, the average mechanic cannot tell you what 5w30 means. 5 thousandths protection (hot) between mating surfaces (rods & bearings, push rods & lifters). 30 thousands protection (cold) between surfaces. If its an older engine, I recommend a higher viscosity oil. 10w40, for an engine 100,000 -200,000 miles.(the gap between surfaces has to be higher as it ages, right??) If you keep your cars running into the 200,000 - 275,000 mile range, I start to use a 20w50 oil. Try a thicker, higher viscosity oil.

I have a 2000 tahoe with a rebuilt trans and 109k on the motor should I replace the motor or just do the standard tune up plugs wires etc....

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, just tune up. If it's consuming oil, whether it be leaking oil through worn or cracked gaskets and seals or burning oil by going past the worn piston rings and being burned in the combustion chamber then you should replace the worn out gaskets or seals, If it's burning oil, rebuilding the engine or buying a crate motor from the Chevy dealership is an option. There are other places that also sell rebuilt engines, check around for the best price and warranty. If after you do the tune-up it still runs rough at idle take to a local garage and have them do a compression test to see if the engine is exessively worn or some other internal damage is present. You should be able to get at least 200,000 miles Or More out of a V-8 being that new. That Is If It Has Been Taken Care Of And Serviced Regularly! Hope this helps.

Oil light in 1999 Toyota camry comes on when idling.

bad to worn out oil pump or excessive oil passage clearances that allowing more oil to pass thru them at a lower pressure due to the bigger opening. It can be a sign of an emminant engine failure due to oil starvation.
