Hi johnnyblaze2, if you want to determine the ratio without opening up the differential, check in the manual that came with your vehicle or there should be a tag on the differential itself good luck let me know what you find

The size of the crown wheel gear. Ford 9 inch is a strong diff used in V8 models. The 8.8 is slightly smaller but is still a good diff. The gear ratios will probably be different. Manual gearbox cars have different ratios to automatics. The higher the ratio, the faster takeoff you will have but lower terminal speed. At high speeds , the high ratio differential will cause high engine revs and poor fuel consumption. A low ratio will be mediocre takeoff but allows high top speeds and lower engine revs. (Good for fuel economy if you are mostly highway driving)
you should only change any diff when damaged or if a different ratio is required and being a 4wd both diffs would need replacing with change of ratio, oil in the diffs should be checked regularly and oil changed every 20,000kms sooner if used in harsh condition
There is usually a tag on the rear cover with the ratio stamped on it. If the tag has been lost you count the number of teeth on the ring gear and divide that by the number of teeth on the pinion. That number is the ratio, expressed as (your number:1) example: 3.73:1. Ive seen some ring gears that have the ratio stamped on the edge. Won't hurt to see if yours is. Remember...the rear gear ratio needs to match what you have at the front or you will destroy the transfer case. It's also better to replace the entire differential drum to drum as setting up a gear set is a precision job that can get expensive, especially if done incorrectly. Whatever you do, don't forget to fill it with lube when finished!!!! Good luck!
This depends upon what is wrong. That's hard to tell from the info given. In both the fr. and rear diffs. there is a ring gear, a pinion shaft and gear, and all are supported by bearings. The interior parts of a diff. are replaceable, provided there is no damage done to the case. This is a very involved procedure though, requiring a very high degree of automotive skill, and very many expensive precision tools and measuring devices. Sometimes a better solution is to buy the entire axle from a salvage yard, (making sure you match the original gear ratio, which is on a tag on the cover,, or found using the vin. call the dealer) Either way it's pretty involved. To determine gear ratio, divide the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinion gear. The total is expressed as a ratio: example # total= 3, ratio is 3 to 1. On a 4x4, this number must exactly match the ratio of the differential you are not changing. In reality any differential can be installed in any vehicle providing that the ratios are correct. To install a complete axle assembly that was not made for the specific vehicle you have requires careful measurements regarding position of the differential yoke in realation to the driveshaft output on a transmission or transfer case, proper standing angle as well as length of axles and axle tubes. All can be modified to fit as necessary but the process is expensive. Typically, you can find a similar unit for your vehicle and match the ratio stamped on a tag found on the diff cover, but to avoid problems, always count the gear teeth and follow my instructions.
Yuo deifinitely have to get rid of one differential to match the other. I would change the rear diff as the gearing in that one will give you really poor mileage... additionally welded spider gears (poor mans positraction) make cornering a nightmare (the outside wheel must turn faster than the inner one on turns, which is why no one uses "spool" type differentials on anything but drag race vehicles (because they only go in straight lines). As far as which Dana unit you are supposed to have, YOU MUST MATCH THE EXACT GEAR RATIO TO THE FRONT UNIT or, it will destroy the transfer case!!! You could even modify a chevy or ford diff to fit under there, but the ratio match has to be exact!!! To find ratio, count the ring gear teeth and the pinion gear teeth. I don't remember the formula but you need to establish a ratio from these two #s.(divide the ring gear# by the pinion#??? answer is expressed as (answer:1 such as 3.23:1))
