First of all, we’ve had this intermittent problem for about three years.  Most of the time we get in the car, turn the key, and it starts right up.

Every once in a while, when we turn the key we get nothing.  No sound of starter engagement, just a few dash lights and a drawn out beeping noise that indicates we aren’t making contact.

Sometimes twisting the steering wheel seems to help.  Sometimes depressing the brake and putting the shift lever in neutral seems to help.  Sometimes raising or lowering the steering wheel helped.  Sometimes just waiting five minutes or so helps.  When any one of these “tricks” works, then the car starts normally and run perfectly.

Only twice has none of these “tricks” worked.  Last year my wife was in West Phoenix and tried everything she could to start for twenty minutes before calling a tow truck.  As she waited, she would periodically try again.  After about 35 minutes, the car started and she cancelled the tow.

AAA tried to find something wrong and failed.  Finally, in desperation, they suggested replacing the ignition switch as a solution.  I for one, didn’t think that was the problem, but let them replace it because they said that solution had worked on other cars in the past.  That cost us a lot of money!  I think AAA also reset some error codes that had been triggered in the computer.

It took a month after that before again failing to start.  One of the “tricks” worked.  We called AAA and told the man we’d gone through about the new failure.  He said if it happens again, call.  It happened a few more times.  Yesterday my wife was in a parking lot and couldn’t start the car.  She tried everything and called me.  I got there about 25 minutes later.  In the meantime she called AAA for a tow to their shop.  The car still hadn’t started when the tow arrived.  The tow driver tried to start the car a number of times and failed.  Finally, he tried again and it started.  My wife drove it to AAA and left it.

That’s where we stand.  Obviously, replacing the ignition didn’t fix it.  I feel we paid a lot for an ignition switch we didn’t need, and that resetting the error codes gave us a brief respite.  Changing keys (I have my own set) doesn’t seem to make a difference, so I don’t think it’s in the key chip (if there is one).  I think the problem is somewhere between the ignition switch and the computer that governs the ignition.  One other thought.  After it has not started and we have tried all the “tricks” then, when it does start up the “service engine soon” light always comes on.  It stays on until the next time the car starts up correctly on its own.

I have the exact same problem as mbconcertus. Have changed fuel filter, checked fuel pressure and leak down; all good, new plugs, all with no luck.

My 2000 Intrigue appears to have the same problem. turning the key will not engage starter. Lights work including headlamps and dash. Afer waiting a random period of time (usually between 5-15 minutes) car will start perfectly and be fine for another couple of months. when it iwill not start again.

If anyone knows an alternate way of getting a hold of the above poster, I found a dog with the name William Smiddy and the above phone number on the dog's tag but the phone number doesn't work. Please contact me at zarinablue gmail .com if you can help. Thanks.

A common cause for this, asuming no check engine light, is a leaking fuel ressure regulator. When they fail, they leak fuel into the vacuum line causing a very rich condition- basically flooded.

Do you see a light on the dash that says "security" when this happens? This might be your problem. When this light is on, it disables the starter. Check out this link for info and ways to fox this yourself. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/

Car wont start but battery is good

"assuming" the engine is cranking normally then you need to identify what is missing

is the fuel pump running
do you have fuel to the injectors
do you have injector pulse

do you have spark

is the security module disabling the engine?

and finally what is the crank/cam timing
however, IF the vehicle is cranking normally then this should not be the cause

Ensure that your battery is fully charged before attempting the relearn procedure. Do not leave any battery charger or jumper cables attached to the battery. Close the hood completely. Some applications require that the doors remain closed during the procedure.
00 + GM
1. Rotate the key to the start position to attempt to start the vehicle (the vehicle will not start). Allow the key to return to the on position. (same as if the vehicle would have started)
2. The theft system light will flash (or stay lit) on the dash for approximately 10 minutes.
3. When the theft system telltale stops flashing (or turns off) turn the key to the off position for 5 seconds and then attempt to start the vehicle.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes.
5. On the next cycle of turning the ignition key from off to crank the vehicle should start
6. Once the vehicle is running, the password is learned and this completes the cycle.
7. Clear any DTC's with a scan tool if necessary. DTC history will be cleared after 100 ignition cycles.

Good luck and thank you for using fixya, keep us posted.

2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue - intermittent starting, starts fine in the morning (usually) arrive at destination and when time to leave will not start or engine dies. Sounds like it will start but doesn't, not...

No. Your description could be several issues. You need to determine if the ignition is coming on when the problem occurs or not, this will eliminate the ignition side of the system from being the problem.
I suspect that the fuel pump is not running when this occurs. Next time this problem happens, just turn the ignition on and listen for the fuel pump. It should run for a short time and then stop. I had this same symptom and it was the wiring (ground wire) going to the fuel pump. Took a long time to actually figure out exactly what was wrong, but we haven't had a problem since.

Doesnt always start, but lights, radio, AC/heat does come on.

First place to check is the battery. Old ones can push your lights , radio, etc, but the starter is the real load. . Can verify this by using jumper cables to a running vehicle and watch your machine fire right up! The reason mornings are the worst, is the battery has had the most time to discharge, and it is probably cooler outside.
