Have you replaced the fuel pump run relay, this may be the cause of the concern, when you crank the engine to start the relay is bypasses, when it starts and you let go of the key the relay energizes and keeps the fuel pump running.

FixYa.com claims they have factory repair manuals, they have nothing of the sort, this is not to say some experts may have manuals, we do, but we work from home and in most cases have a small library. Experts are not employed by FixYa.com, we help free of charge as much as we can with the general automotive knowledge we have learned while working as auto technicians, specific test values, repair procedures and illustrations are unique to each car line, these are not in most cases available to us. Thanks for using FixYa!

    Hello:
I have what seems to be the same problem with my ford focus 2004 SE. I would like to give some more details and see if your diagnosis remains the same. The car stalls when its a short stop. If you shut it down and then immeipdiately start back up there's no problem, if your stop is fairly extensive (30 mins) no problem. I question whether it is a fuel problem, since when it starts, before it stalls out you can hit the gas, open the throttle plate to allow air in and it will run as normal, let off the gas and it sputters out. My first thought was aisle air control sticking when warm, but I've seen on other forums ppl tried that to no avail. Removing the neg battery cable (popping the hood also causes the engine to cool faster) and the problem goes away. Thoughts?

Check for vacuum leaks and your PVC hose it may be collapsing (seems to be a common problem on this vehicle). Remove and clean EGR. Check the attached links, instruction and guides on why Focus stalls. Good luck

DO you have any engine codes still remaining? IF car restarts right away its gonna be tricky finding out what is dropping out. Engine codes are the best clue to start the hunt for problem. From experience however, I have had a few of these come in for same symptom. There are two wires that run from Ignition module/coil pack to the crank sensor, insulation falls off and they melt to each other or to hot engine, intermittent short disruption of signal, hence car stalls whenever wherever and restarts right away.

If it wont stall in neutral or park it may have a bad torque convertor clutch in the trans causing the engine to stall.

Have tried getting quality gasoline at a reliable station? It sounds like water in your fuel system. Add a couple bottles of Iso-Heet fuel system dryer everytime you fill up the next few times, and that should cure it.
