Question about 1984 Porsche 944

3 Answers

Antifreeze smell Upon start up of my 87' 944 I get an antifreeze smell outside the car by the engine with the hood closed and some time while I drive. I replaces all the hoses and radiator so there aren't any leaks that I can see, what can it be? Thanks Dan944

If u smell the antifreeze inside the car, the heater core needs to be replaced most likely. It is leaking inside, and will get worse, to the point of 'fogging up' the windows inside.

Are you using/losing coolant?   Be aware that small heater hoses take coolant from system to the passenger compartment air blower.  There is a heat exchanger (little radiator looking thing) in this air box that may also develop a leak.  Sometimes these hoses are overlooked when replacing the larger cooling system hoses.
Check for white smoke out the tailpipe AFTER the car is warmed up.  This could be caused by blown head gasket, or cracked/warped cylinder head.  High mileage, older car and overheating incidents increase the risk for these.  Burnt antifreeze still smells like antifreeze.  You might smell it in the engine compartment or interior due to a minor exhaust leak.
You can have your mechanic (or yourself) pressurize the cooling system, then check with a gauge that the pressure holds and doesn't "bleed down".
I haven't owned a 944, but if I did I would check places like http://www.944online.com/cgi-bin/forum/forum.cgi
Good Luck, ..ajm

Antifreeze smell and loose antifreeze in the engine compartment, 2001 Nissan Altima.

Radiators with plastic tanks suffer from splitting/cracked tanks on the older cars. Any coolant outside the radiator is an indication of failure and the radiator should be replaced with a new unit as repair costs almost as much as a new one. There is no need for genuine as the radiator manufacturers make genuine and non genuine to the same specs for around half the price. Any accredited radiator shop will have a unit for you.

Mitsibushi pajero oil light time

White SWEET smelling smoke, or white OILY smelling smoke? If it's white thick SWEET smelling smoke, you have a blown head gasket - that's the smell of antifreeze burning in the engine, which it should NEVER do. If it's white OILY smelling smoke (smells a lot like diesel), then you're getting too much fuel into the cylinders.

If it's sweet-smelling smoke (antifreeze), pull the oil dipstick & check the oil level. If the oil level is HIGH and the oil looks like a mocha milkshake, that's absolutely conclusive - that's what happens when antifreeze gets into your oil, and it's nasty corrosive to engine parts.

I'm not at all surprised that the oil light is on if it won't start - you won't get much oil pressure until the engine is running.

Sugary burning smell while driving

That smell is most likely antifreeze. If the smell gets noticeably stronger when you turn on the AC/Heater, it is possible that your "heater coil" has started leaking. You will need the services of a professional if that is the case. Those are very hard to change.

Another possibility is your thermostat is not opening, causing your engine to overheat - steaming some of the coolant (antifreeze)/water mixture out of the system.

And thirdly, it is possible that someone spilled antifreeze on the radiator etc when adding fresh antifreeze - and you smell it after the engine warms up. If your car is not over-heating and you are not having to ad antifreeze/water to the radiator, then just keep driving. The problem will most likely go away.

I hope this is helpful to you. If yes, please take a sec to rate me. Thanks!

My 2002 for taurus runs out of antifreeze every 2 weeks. I don't see a leak anywhere. Also, sometimes I can smell antifreeze when standing in front of the car, near the hood. Is it possible it is...

No, it can't burn it, the engine would seize if it would do that. The antifreeze is lost thru evaporation - this is why you smell it. Check the radiator cap and the overfill tube and bowl.

My car started smelling funny...pulled over lifted hood and it was steaming...white smoke came from under hood and tail pipe, car would not start again. Some say it may be a head gasket? How would I know?

You can tell by looking at dip stick if the oil has a creamy white substance there is antifreeze getting in oil (blown head gasket) or if ther is excessive white smoke coming from exhaust pipe upon acceleration. steam from under hood may be a coolant leak from a rubber hose or it may be leaking from the cylinder head onto the exhaust manifold also the car will be using up antifreeze.

When i run my 1996 dodge ram 1500 it smells like antifreeze. i had the head changed but it smells like antifreeze. what could be the problem?

check the coolant level to see if it has dropped. Then look under the engine, for any leaks.Look for pools of coolant on top of the engine,or run down on the sides of the engine. Then look for radiator hoses, ans heater hoses that are leaking. If you are loosing antifreeze ,and you are sure the coolant is going somewhere, you may sill have a head,or head gasket, that are bad.If it has not been long before the head change, then the antifreeze may be still present in the exhaust,or on the engine,so you may have to wait a little longer for smell to disapate.Cleaning the engine can help.

Bought a 1996 Ford Taurus and it is running hot

If its boiling over then your coolant flow is blocked. I would start with replacing the thermostat sounds like its not opening.

Smelling antifreeze from the coolent A !
Definitely a leak!
Hopefully not a head gasket leak!
Try warming it up without any accessories on until it gets good and hot, pop the hood and look all around!

1996 Volvo 850 wagon sputtered @ intersection smell of antifreeze

I would check that the auxilliary drive belt that runs the alternator and probably the water pump hasn't just broken, causing the engine to overheat and the battery to run flat. Just a suggestion, hope it helps.
