Question about 2003 Dodge Neon

Periodic no start

My wifes 03' neon has bouts of turning over but not starting. It will do this once or twice a week and then not again for a month or two. The first thing I thought was the fuel pump but don't those usually go out and then don't work at all? There have been times when she has this problem everyday for a week and then it will start perfectly everytime for a while, then maybe give her problems a couple of times a week and again maybe not for a month or more. The problem is she never knows when it will happen, there is no warning sign and it leaves her stranded. From what I understand on this car the fuel filter and pressure regulator are built into the fuel pump so I can't even check/change them without taking down the fuel tank. Help Please!

Can't see it being the ignition switch as it turns over just fine. It appears to be a fuel problem. I am wondering if the flow valve in the fuel pump is allowing the fuel to go back to the tank and draining the fuel lines so the pump has to fill the lines every time. Since the fuel pump only runs for three seconds, the fuel is not getting to the injectors all the time. Other times the valve may be working and keeping the lines full so that the fuel is available. Although, I did change the fuel pump relay and my wifes car is now starting fine everytime. It has been almost a month with no problem so we'll see if it might have been a weak fuel pump relay. Joshcarz: listen when you first turn your key to see if you can hear the pump humming in the back of the car, if not change the fuel pump relay in the box on the drivers side wheel well (under the hood). I just used the horn relay or the AC relay to test it rather than buy one right now.

Easy way to check the fuel pump is to ,, turn key to the run position, open hood and find the fuel rail that supplies the injectors, at the far left (drivers side) you find a black cap at the end of the rail , remove the cap and yourll see a valve, resembles a tire / tube valve stem, place a rag or small container under the rail and with a pen or small pointed object press the center of the valve in, if your pump is working , fuel should spray out and if enough does you can here your pump rebuild the pressure

Your ignition key switch could be worn out from the weight of too many keys on the ring?

how did you find out it is the injector causing the problem? the injectors are wired in series on these vehicles, it is possible that another faulty injector may be causing the problem. although it may be difficult to find if this happens intermittently. A scope test may be the only way to find the problem. Does the engine light come on with a misfire code on Cylinder #1? P0301 or r u just getting a random misfire code P0300 ? a bit more info on the vehicle may also be helpful........ engine size? # of cylinders 4 or 6 ?

Periodic stall issue. All guages go to zero,

Sounds like an intermittent short in the wire harness or ECU(computer).
If you can locate the computer(in the passenger side kickpanel), try
tapping on it with a plastic handled screwdriver handle, to see if the car
suddenly shuts down? If it does, your computer is shot. Good luck.
