Transmission, will not switch to higher gear

Just picked up a FREE 93 Buick LeSabre and of course it has issues. The main one is that while driving it to my house it would not go faster than 35 mph. The engine is revving up a lot, just won't switch to a higher gear. I tried shifting it from O-drive to drive and 2nd and 1st... no change. Any idea on the cause??? I am going to change out all of the fluids soon, but want to know if there is anything else I should be looking at in the meantime.

May or may not help but the modulator valve controls alot of the shift aspects of the 4t60 transmission you have. id try to replace that its about 15 to 20 dollars and a simple bolt on

The first thing to do is run a OBD 1 self test for trouble codes, this could be a defective VSS as well, but that should set a trouble code.

How do I get my Buick to switch gears?

This is likely not a user repairable problem. Probably a worn out automatic transmission that needs to be rebuilt, or a vacuum actuator switch. Either will require a transmission mechanic.

Does your car Idle higher than it has been. Vacuum hose going to the modulator may leaking. This would also cause the higher Idle and your transmission not to shift.

93 buick lesabre when going up hill between 1500 and 1800 rpm the car misses. If it kicks down a gear and the rpm gets up to about 2000 rpm it's nice and smooth. Already changed spark plugs and wires and...

to kick down a gear and run smooth is normal, specially for an older car. what you can do is buy a higher octane fuel, as you already did the plugs

Broken steering collumn 95 buick lesabre

Okay well here is your most likely problem, the nuetral safety switch it's located on the transaxle(transmission where the shift linkage comes in)you can test this to make sure its working but it will require conituity tester,a parts store might also test it for free, this is a $100+ dollar switch,so if needs to be replaced check with the local salvage yards to see if you can get one used.0ccdc81.gif

2001 buick lesabre, transmission problem?

There is a pressure sol. in the transmission that is bad . This is a common problem that requires removal of the side transmission cover. The transmission does not need to be rebuilt! Talk to a gm dealer. I have sold over a hundred of these pressure sol. and the side cover gaskets to a real gm transmission mechanic that have fixed this problem. GM parts over 20 years.

Will not shift to third gear

U need to have a trouble code test run to see if the 2-3 shift solenoid inside the trans is defective or the circuit to it, this can also be a trans connector problem.

I have a 2002 Buick LeSabre. I'm not quite sure what's wrong with it, but when I switch the gears, the car will not move. And the wheels are also locked up.

suspect the transmission /a piled up chain will cause that..front wheel drives break chains inside , a common problem..
