Question about 1990 Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

Hard to start when engine is cold

I have a 1990 mitsubishi galant 2.0 SOHC, 5 speed, it only has 139,000 miles on it. plus the check engine light is on.
Problem....In the mornings when i go to start my car it takes like 10 min to start after i pump the heck out of the gas peddle. This happens even in the summer time when it is 90 degrees outside, but once it is warmed up i can turn it off wait 15 min then go to start it and it fires right up. I did some research on the web and acouple sources told me that it could be the fuel pump. Others have told me it could be a cold start injecter..I also found out that alot of older Fuel Injected cars have these.
Question 1 how do i locate the cold start injecter(s), and is this something i can do myself or do i have to take it to a mechanic?

The thing you need to do is run a leak down test on the fuel pump overnight, hook up a fuel pump test guage to the fuel injector gas rail test port, run the engine, note the fuel pressure when you shut the engine off, it should not drop more than 5 PSI overnight, if it does you need a new fuel pump. Your car doesn't use a cold start valve, that was used on very early Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection systems, they where last used in the 80's

SOHC = single overhead camshaft
This answer covers Mitsubishi Diamante1.8L, 2.4L, 3.0L (SOHC and DOHC), 3.5L, and 1997-2000 1.5L Engines.

Remove the sensor and slide the reluctor wheel off of the crankshaft-2.4L engine shown.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the timing belt.
3. Unplug the sensor connector.
4. Unfasten the two retaining bolts, then remove the CKP sensor from the vehicle.
5. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

Mitsubishi Aspire
Mitsubishi MX/MF
Mitsubishi VRG
Mitsubishi VRM (Hong Kong)
9 engines offered, day 1.
and many trans,
4-speed automatic
5-speed manual
5-speed semi-automatic

Mitsubishi F4A23-2; 4 Speed
KM175, KM176, KM177 - F4A21-2 (176-5), K4A22-2 (175-5), F4A23-2 (177-8); ES Model
41TE
F4A33-1

the truth is , you didnt post country, nor engine size.
they match engine power to transmission (load rating)
so>? forget that.. that is for later.
IT DIED< so if the engine dont START the tranny issues are moot.
so does it crank.????
if it cranks , it next needs spark got spark to all cylinders.
that is if its not the Diesel engine, IS IT??

I need to find a timing belt diagram for a 1994 mitsubishi galant

Your car will have the 2.4L SOHC engine in it (AKA 4G64). This manual will show you how to replace the timing belt (and more). Timing belt procedures start on page 33.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/4570538/Mitsubishi-4G63-4G64-Engine

(P.S. this manual also includes the 4G63 engine, you can identify your engine by looking at the procedures for the Single OverHead Cam[or SOHC])
