Ok, for one, it can bne the relay, fuel filter or, in most cases i have found. It is the starter, Starters are more likely to go out. Fuel Filters have to take a lot of beating to be so clogged that they wont put enough fuel through the system to start the car. Relay's are just that, they relay a short burst of electricity to the car to help the starter. Depending on the year of the car, will depend on if the starter and relay are seperate or combined. I need more clarification please.

Well if the Start did go out, then power is not going through the system to turn the engine over. The start is a series of, for lack of a better term, Cogs, like in a grandfather clock. If one of them doesnt get turned because of lack of power, then it wont work. Also, if it is a Manual Shift Jeep, you can still perform a rolling start, which means getting it rolling, then you quickly pop the clutch and turn the key at the same time.
That should get you to the Auto Shop, in case you dont have the tools or knowledge to replace the starter yourself. Usually when a car wont turn over, the simpliest solution is the starter. It can very well be the Fuel Pump or FIlter, but its very much more rare. Starters just wear out, because their teeth get worn down.
If its an Automatic Shift engine, then i would suggest, in case you dont want to take it to a shop, because it does cost a heavy penny to take it to a shop, i would suggest going down to an Auto Parts Store and picking up a Haynes Manual for your car. It will have All the details for repairing your car. I would suggest reading the sections on Fuel Pumps, Fuel Filters and Starters at least 4 or 5 times, really memorize the information, but still have the book on hand when you go to replace parts. I can not stress enough on the fact of having that book with you. It can save a lot of work and money having it. Also, if you ever decide to trade the car or sell it. Having the book is a nice bonus to mention for potential buyers.

Also Do not be afraid to ask questions, You can always contact me here or at Ryd66@yahoo.com, I will be glad to help in all ways that I can. I understand the need to get the car fixed.

My 1987 F250 eng.460ci . It stalls while driving and idling. And hard to get back started ack like no fuel but I replaced both fuel pump and fuel relays and tune up

Remove the gas-cap, to let air into the gas-tank.
You have a "vacuum" (low air pressure) inside the tank,
and the fuel-pump is not strong-enough to overcome that condition.

Chevy uplander going uphill sputters and check engine light blinks multiple times?

Usually a sputter will occur under load conditions like going up hill from a lack of fuel. Start by changing the fuel filter.

My car just stopped working it seems no gas is gettin to the engine but it used to stall alot not like oh s*** im out of gas but the stall when you press the gas and absolutely nothin happens then the car...

Here's a technique that works for me. Locate the fuel pump relay, in the fuse and relay panel. Pull the fuel pump relay and look at the bottom of the relay. You will see that the cover can be removed by carefully prying it off using a small flat blade screwdriver or an x-acto knife. Once the cover is removed, reinstall the relay. Have someone start the car while you watch the contacts on the relay. If the contacts close, the relay is OK. If you turn the key to on without starting the car, you car close the relay manually. (You can use your finger to close the relay. Listen carefully, at the fill tube with the gas cap removed. If the fuel pump is getting power you will hear the whine of the motor. If not then check the fuel pump fuse first then the 12 volts at the connector on top of the fuel tank. I've had a problem such as you described, where the car will start but stalls if you try to give it gas. I found that some GM's use a small (2 inch)section of rubber hose to connect the pump to the steel fuel line inside the tank. The hose splits which allows enough fuel to reach the engine, but not enough to run it under any load. The fuel filter should be replaced if it is suspect, but probably isn't your main problem. Hope this helps! Dano

Gets gas gets spark but don't start. new fuel

1. does it turn over? if so, strong, or weak? 2. did you replace the fuel filter? 3. coil packs, or distributor (pack(s) can be tested) if distributed check cap and rotor, replace coil, but first check starter relay - 4. Check all ignition fuses, starter fuse - (along with relay{above}) 5. Check all connections from battery - positive, negative etc.

My '84 s10 ran 2 years ago, then it sat outside untouched until now, it turns over but doesn't want to fire up. What should I do to get it running? Is it not getting enough fuel?

It needs a good tune up such as oil change, new wires and plugs, air filer, fuelfilter, and if possible try to drain gas lube all tire rod ends an as much as the chassis that has grease fittings.

Usually @ 50-60,000. New air filter, Gas filter, Plugs and wires.......If car starts running rough or hard to start and miss fire is a good sign of a tune up needed..............Hope this helps.

When I insert my key to start the engine on my 1998 volkswagen beetle it takes sevral attempt to start the engine?

(have a diagnostics test done on the car) this will alert a mechanic (auto parts dealer rep.) of any codes that may tell them what is wrong or if anything needs serviced or replaced.

1. If the car has a strong turn over, you may need a new alternator. Usually when it's strong enough to turn the engine over, but does not start right away, the alternator is not holding enough charge, or has just enough to turn it over after a few trys. This will also cause the battery to go dead as well after so many attempts (days).

2. Have the alternator and battery tested. If these are both good, then it may be the starter itself, or possibly the starter relay. Considering the starter relay is cheaper than a starter, have it replaced first, and see if that helps. These get weak over time from the flow of electricity. It will be located in the relay box under the hood, usually near battery - this is a farily newer car so call an auto parts dealer for details as to its locatioin.

3. If the relay makes no changes, and before replacing the starter, consider replacing the fuel filter. If this is plugged, it may cause the fuel pump from pumping sufficient fuel to the engine - this usually causes a hesitation while driving, so if this is not an issue, than this may eliminate it right away. However, as an FYI, it never hurts to replace the fuel filter as they should be changed at least once a year,or at every tune up service.

4. Lastly, if any of the above do not work, replace the starter, and POSSIBLY the fuel pump. If the car drives normal after starting, then the fuel pump is probably okay. If you feel any type of hesitation, simply fill your tank with regular(unleaded) gas and use a can of SeaFoam to clean the fuel lines, as well as the intake, fuel injectors, and fuel filter.

On hot days when I stop for gas, I shut the car

Fuel pump worn out and is weak, when the fuel is warm the pump expands and the fuel pressure is good. When the colder gas is added or when the gas has cooled down the fuel pump.
The pump can not create enough pressure to run the fuel injector due to the piston and sleeve in the pump are worn out, you might get another year if you lucky by replacing your fuel filer.
Start with the simple and replace your fuel filter and check your fuel pressure readings at the shredder valve on your fuel injector rails. You should have i think 56 PSI to run them properly.
Thank you for using fixya and be safe.
