It's probably time to replace the belt. As the belt gets older, it stretches and a "glaze" forms on the belt. These two things together contribute to the belt slipping. The squeal you hear is the belt actually slipping on the pulleys.

My van is making a squeling noise when i accelerate

Does the squealing noise only happen when you accelerate? It may be the serpentine belt. If you look at the belt on the inside where the grooves are and the belt is all cracked up, then I'd start with the belt.

Squealing noise and hard to steer

The squeling noise is your belt slipping. the belt is what turns the power steering pump and gives you power steering. If the pump is not spinning then you have no power steering.

A short term fix would be to go to a parts store and buy a belt dressing. This comes in a spray can and is very easy to use, you just follow the instructions and spray the belt.

You should have the belt checked to make sure it isn't about to break.

I hope this helps you.

My 56 ford focus 1600 zetec is making an awful noise when even slightly turning the steering wheel in either direction, does this mean my power steering has had it????

Hi

No most likely the power steering needs a new belt, when they loosen off or start to decay they squel lodly, ofetn they can be tightened up but for the cost involved just buy a new one. if the steering still feels like it is working correctly but just noisey then most likely it is fine and it will just be the belt.

on a car this year the power steering rack and pump should last another few years yet.

Hope this helps, p.s a garage will not charge much to fix this.

Squeling when I turn stering wheel

if you are referring turning wheel to full in each direction, i think this is normal. The belt is slipping under such conditions. Your belt may be good for now but it could be the tensioner is shot.

Good luck.

The steering wheel makes a creaking sound everytime you turn it, could that be powere steering belt or something? It is full of ps fluid.

Check the belt to see if it's tight enough and check the power steering fluid reservoir to make sure it's full to the full mark. If neither of these are the problem the power steering pump is the problem.

When my husband turns the car it squels and he has to fight to turn in

There is a very good chance the belt that drives the power steering pump,is slipping. When it slips, you loose the power steering effect and it makes it hard to turn.It will slip under load.i.e when turning.Check the fluid level and belt.Replace belt if need be.I think this will be the problem. The squeeling is the belt slipping.Hope this helps you

I have 94 4.3 caprice it squel sound like a belt but i took the belt all the way off still squel nobody knows help

If you took all the belts off the car wouldn't start!!!! You may have taken off one belt (it appears tha't not the cause) Chances are its not the belt but an actuall pully from one of your accessories (power steering, alternator, AC compressor etc..) while the car is running (and be careful of loose clothing and hair) see if you can get your ear close the squealing and narrow it down. This will help pinpoint the problem.

SQUEL at all speeds..

Bearings in thermostatic fan. Try and run it without the fan on for a minute. Maybe you can even get the fan to squeal by turning it by hand, but you probably won't get it to go fast enough.
