The front suspension on your vehicle will have struts, you should not attempt to replace these without special tools and a hoist. the rear probably has a standard shock, if so, these can be easily replaced but you will still have to support the vehicle on a lift. simply unbolt them from the top and bottom and reinstall the new ones and torque them

Front shocks


Now we have a problem here, either you didn't give the right model vehicle when you posted or you have one heck of a mixed up dodge durango :P Durangos share frames and suspension with dodge rams and both don't have shock towers per say. They have one bolt holding them to the lower control arm and a frame mount with just one very accessible bolt to hold the shock in place. Usually 3 bolts and a shock tower is only on MacPherson struts usually seen on smaller cars and smaller SUVs. And in any case if you do have a MacPherson type shock and shock tower, you DO need to remove the 3 bolts on the shock tower AND remove the bolts at the spindle to remove the whole assembly (shock, spring and top plate) to change the shocks. And also i must warn you that it is really really really NOT safe to just unscrew the shock bolt that hold it in place in the top plate, as the coil spring will be under pressure even without the weight of the car and will spring out pretty darn fast and you might break or cut off a finger or an arm. And NO i'm not joking... You need a special tool called a coil spring compressor to safely remove and reinstall the coil spring when changing the shock absorber on those models. The shocks in the rear just unbolt top and bottom, disconnect the air line and replace them.

Struts are used in the front. You'll need to remove them and then have a spring compressor to change the struts. An alignment check is recommended after the struts are replaced.

Rear shocks would be in the boot or back seat - just unbolt and replace, you will have to remove both wheels. Front shocks may need a spring compressor if the shocks are inside the road spring, DO NOT ATTEMPT FRONT SHOCKS WITHOUT A SPRING COMPRESSOR YOU WILL GET SERIOUSLY HURT!!!

Yes its old shocks,the purpose of the shock is to slow down and control the rapid movement of the spring . The purpose of the spring is to control your ride height. If your vehicle is sagging the spring is no longer supporting the proper ride height and is considered worn and will need replacement. Having a bit of trouble understanding your post but if you need to stiffen up the rear suspension I'd recommend using either coil-over shocks or air shocks back there. (make sure you have enough room for them though.
Springs loose some of their weight carrying ability as they get older. Possible you need to replace them as well. A good upgrade for springs are "cargo coils" which are a variable rate spring.

Replacing the shocks & struts


If your not very mechanically inclined , Its best & safe for you & others not to try to change out struts. But if you are inclined, then this is what you need to do the job. Struts are shock absorbers that are inside of a highly compressed spring. You will need spring compressors that you can buy or rent at your local auto parts stores. You need to compress the spring before removing the center shock. If you do not compress the spring sufficiently the shock can come out at a high rate of speed causing injury to you & others. You will need to compress the spring from both sides, ( opposite from each other ) if you install a spring compressor on one side just put the other tool right across from it on the same spring. compressing the spring evenly on both sides. Not all at one time just on one side of the spring. After doing so remove the top & bottom nuts of the shock. Your rented or bought spring compressor should come with directions & illastrations to better assist you with the job. Good Luck.

I usually charge a base price on shocks and struts.to change shocks I charge around 30.00 or 40.00 dollars labor per pair.struts i charge 65.00 per pair.i'm cheeper than most guys because of the rural small town i live in here in alabama.but it may be your leaf spring not real sure by the discription,you could mean the shock,or the strut but it could mean the leaf spring which i think montanas have a shock and leaf spring set up not struts.i can't pull up my picture in my head too clearly,i've seen underneath hundreds of those vans just can't remember.hope i helped you with a price,don't let any body rip you off on the labor cause shocks are fairly easy to change.

Changing Front Shocks on 2001 Tundra


Its pretty straight forward with the proper spring compressor, the springs are pretty strong. After you remove them from the truck mark the top plate and spring to maintain the proper orientation when you swap out the shock. If the top plate turns it'll be hard to get the studs lined up on install.

Changing rear shocks on a 1990 jag


No. But if can't get it on a lift or high enough to work under comfortably..it will be very awkward. The calipers get in the way when you are removing the springs and shocks as a unit. You can move the part and get it out and down, but you will need to remove the rear wheels and let the rear springs hang down.
Make sure you have a good spring compressor to get the old springs off....in most cases it is the springs that go soft and not the shocks...
Don't assume that it is the shocks unless you know for sure they are bad.
