SOURCE: Power steering

Make sure the fluid level is OK, if reservoir MT ad, with out the cap till air comes out and fluid gets in to system, turn the steering right to left wile You add fluid with cap off, till fluid is not longer going down and reservoir inside gets quiet, when fluid level is OK, put cap back and try it, if system did not recovered normality and loud noise comes from the pump, pump needs replacing, if steering is steel hard, no noise comes from pump, look a steering box or steering arms, if truck has Rakenpinon, look for broken boots, pit man arm

SOURCE: 1996 Dodge Stratus stalls when starting

I had this problem with my 99 Durango and went to to discover this was a major problem with 98 & 99 Durangos. The fix was easy -- PCM "brain" was exchanged with a refurbished PCM "brain" from an online PCM company in Florida. You can google as I can't remember name of company. I called them and they said - Yep this is the fix -- the guys told me 3 screws all I had gone to several mechanics and dealers -- none could figure it out. I was so grateful that someone gave me the clue I needed.

SOURCE: replacing serpentine belt 2002 dodge stratus

Did this on my 2002 Stratus 2.4L. I agree with other poster, you do have to remove the passenger tire and wheel wall to do it, but the tensioner travels clockwise.
Note: I offer this solely as a description of how I accomplished the task on my vehicle. It should not be taken as me advising anyone else in any way on how or whether they manage to repair their own vehicles.

1) Engaged parking brake, loosened lugs on passenger front tire.
2) Jacked-up and placed jack-stand.
3) Removed piece of black under-carriage which surrounds the oil filter and attaches to front bumper. There are at least 10 plastic push-pins to remove and I managed to destroy half of them in the process.
4) Positoned belt over lower pulleys and tensioner (as best as possible) then used a bungee to hold the top end of belt up while I worked under the car.
5) Used a 3/8 ratchet and inserted into square hole attached to the tensioner, disengaged the tensioner (moves clockwise) then used a brace to keep the ratchet handle in that position.
6) From top, removed bungee and finished placing belt over alternator, checked the position of entire belt, reengaged the tensioner, and replaced wall and wheel.

Changed my front passenger side brake caliper on my 2000 dodge 3500. i have bled the brakes, but now i dont have power steering. how do i get it back?

These systems are not related to one another in any way. the best thing to do is start off on a full diagnostic of the power steering system. Start with the fluid level, belt tension then check to see if the pump is bad. the rack would be my next target if all of those are checking out.

To test the power steering pump:
Open the power steering reservoir.
Have some one turn the wheel from left to right slowly there should be motion in the power steering reservoir.

testing the steering rack:
while turning the steering wheel from left to right listen for mechanical noises from the rack.

good luck,

How do you tighten the power steering belt on 2000 Dodge Stratus V6, is there a tensioner?

There is 3 bolts on power steering pump that should be loosed but not removed. 2 on the bottom and one on the top that will have to be loosened from under the car. there is a square shaped hole on the power steering pump brace that a breaker bar is inserted and belt tightened, hold to tight position and tighten the 3 bolts back down

When a steering wheel is turned to the end of its travel, the power steering pump makes an objectionable hiss. But my Stratus makes this noise when I turn the wheel at center when fluid is cold....

early sign of the rack and pinion going bad if you look inside the inner tie rod boots you will see leaks starting. prepare to have it replaced sooner than later.

1999 Dodge Stratus 115.000 mi. 2.5 liter. Steering went from normal, to making EXTREME groans and creaking noises, basically overnight. I visually inspected the Rack and Pinion assy. Looks O.K. no fluid...

Could be that the pivot bearing on the top of one of the struts has packed up. It means taking the strut out and compressing the spring to get at it, not the easiest or safest job. Before doing this have a look at the ends of the steering rack and make sure that the steering arms enter and exit in the centre of each end. Sometimes if the steering action becomes laboured it can be as a result of the bearing at one end of the rack giving up and the associated steering arm begins to drag against the inside of the rack end. In this instance it might be possible to have a new bearing fitted rather than replace the whole rack.

My 2004 dodge stratus won't steer

Well it's one of three things:
1. The fluid has leaked out and you should check for leaks and check the fluid level.
2. If the level is fine your power steering pump could be bad.
3. If the level is fine your rack and pinion could be bad.
