I am not familiar with triumphs but here is a general way to find cylinder #1. remove spark plug bring piston #1 up to top dead center on the compression stroke and see where the distributor rotor is pointing and match to your dist cap

You can get a copy of the original dealer service manual at faxonautoliterature.com. It should contain complete wiring diagrams, but a quick e-mail or phone call can confirm. I've used them before and had excellent service. Hope this helps.
