SOURCE: how much are piston ring replacements for 1997

This would not be just rings. Rings do not tap, and rings do not make white smoke. Rings make smoke that is often described as blue, even though it also has some white.

White smoke, on the other hand, usually is a LOT. and quite visible and thick. Some say it smells sweet. This is coolant in the combustion chamber....

I sugges that the tapping be diagnosed, then decide what to do, as surgery may be too costly to make any sense.

A valve repair, and a head R&R and resurface, check for cracks, and put back on just MIGHT make sense to spend the $$ .

Could be head gasket, piston, or other nasty issue. Smoke isn't a good sign. Run a compression check, that may help indicate where the problem is.

04 DODGE Ram hemi cylinder 3 misfire

Check engine compression and compare. then test running engine compression most engines have about 130-170 cranking compression and about 90-110 running compression. OR bring that cylinder to its Top Dead Center compression stroke apply air to the cylinder and check to see where the air is going open throttle plate bad intake valve, from exhaust pipe bad exhaust valve, from oil cap piston rings.

If you unbolt the con rod bearings and push the piston out of the bores, then the rings can be changed but the bores MUST be honed at the same time.

Have oil in one of the spark plug cylinders what would be causing this ?

broken/worn piston ring(s). Each piston has 2 rings. These can be replaced by the DIY mechanic by
1) removing head of engine (remove head gasket - you'll replace it), then
2) manually wind the engine (with a ratchet wrench & socket) til the piston in question pops up
3) remove both rings (with ring pliers - available from any auto parts store)
4) install 2 new rings (with a ring installation collar - available at any auto parts store)
--- choose ring installation tool to the correct size for your pistons.
5) re-install head of engine (replacing head gasket)

Note that this procedure preserves the engine timing, so you need not reset it.

I have 2004 dodge 2500 with 5.9 cummings it has excessive blow by and blowing oil out slobber tube what is my problem

Loyd

I have 2004 Dodge 3500 w/ 5.9 Cummins , at about 80,000 miles I had excessive oil fumes coming from underneath the hood of the truck . Fumes came from the slobber tube . Took it to the dealership . At first they replaced the fuel rail . Problem got worse . Took it to the dealership again , Oil pan dropped , engine head removed , fuel tank checked , at my cost at first . Results , number one piston top pitted like some took a pick axe to it , parts of piston rings missing , number six piston top clean , but parts of the rings missing as well . This took 17 days for the dealership to find out and to agree to have the engine repaired under warrenty . 14 more days to order and install new engine and turbo . 31 days in total to repair an engine that is defective . Two other engine were in the shop at the same time with the same problem . I now have 100,000 miles on the truck and only 20,000 miles on the new engine with the signs of the oily fumes showing up again . So , rings crack , pieces make their way out of the engine block thru the turbo , back pressure in the crank force the oily fumes out of the slobber tube . That has been one of the problems I have experienced with my Dodge Ram . I am not impressed with my 2004 Dodge , however , my 1995 Dodge Ram was great . Is the new Cummins Engines a true diesel with a replacable cylinder sleeve ?

I hope that this is not your problem , but the fastest way is to check compression in each cylinder and crank case pressure .

Take your vehicle back to your mechanic, and have him perform a DRY, then a WET compression test. Please provide both readings back to me. In the meantime, ask him what it would cost you to him replace the piston rings. This is your problem. The 2 tests will simply verify me thinking.

Oil out the tailpipe is definitely oil control rings and all the rings on the pistons simply worn out from high mileage. If keeping the vehicle,a remanufactured engine would be the best choice, with a good warranty.A used engine is also a possibility, but sometimes hit or miss.A rebuild would consist of about the same cost as a remanufactured unit.To correct only the oil problem would consist of a complete disassembly of the engine. The block would have to be taken to a machine shop and overbore the cylinders whatever is needed,.020"-.040",and purchase new pistons corresponding to the overbore, and all new rings.Top compression ring, secondary compression ring, both oil control rings, and the oil control expander. This will correct the oil out the tailpipe, but you are at a full on rebuild at that stage.
