2005 f-150 4x4 extended cab 4x4 is not engaging when the dial is turned

    My 06 f150's 4x4 is not engaging, the light does not come on when the switch on dash put in 4H or 4L This was an occasional problem that progressively got worse, to the point of not working at all. only 40,000km on it.

    My 2005 F150 has the very same problem. At first the 4x4 occasionally would not engage, now it will only occasionally engage.

    I just tried mine and it did the same thing. It is only 14 degrees out. I did take mine in for the vacuum recall, Makes you wonder if the dealer did something.......mmm other wise the truck is great, I was told via Advance auto, the vacuum could be my problem.... will let you all know

    I have a 2005 and my 4x4 does not work either in H or L. I checked all the fuses. No lights come on except during start up check. No relay sounds.

    2005 f-150 4x4 also not engaging. Checked fuse #11 (4x4 solenoid) ok, then #29 & #30 (PCM 4x4 Power) both blown. Replaced 15A fuses, still not engaging (rechecked #11,29,30 - fuses not blown). Dash lights show 4x4HI 4x4LO on startup, but not when using switch (also no audible noises of attempted engagment). Next job is to pull every fuse & check. Any suggestions?

    2005 FX4 -turn knob to engage four wheel drive and nothing happens..worked perfectly for first few times i engaged the 4 x 4, but now it wont do anything..light doesnt come on, no buzzer, no nothing..

    I try to turn the switch on my 05 F150, nothing. No noise, no lights, nothing. It worked 3 weeks ago hunting, then the other day, nothing. I have checked fuses, and they all appear ok. What next, switch? or take it in?

    I used my 4x4 in town on my way to a road trip. I turned it off, went about 250 miles and it wouldnt turn back on again. I have been using it a lot lately, but it has mostly been engaged due to the weather. I checked all my fuses and they were all fine, but I dont know about my relays. I dont know much about trucks and I dont want to pay Ford $500 to fix a relay.

    Yep I use my 4X4 maybe 3 or 4 times a year today we go skiing get 4" of snow so I turn the knob and no 4x4 light on the dash neither hi or lo working and I get stuck in the parking lot..... go figure! Can temps below 20F cause it?

    I have the same problem, except that the 4Hi and 4Lo indicator light comes on but it does not engage the front wheels. It seems to happen most often when its cold (when needed the most). It will also disengage itself sometimes when under a strain, Last year I took it to the dealership about this problem and they said a wire was loose and they fixed it.RIGHT, It worked for a week or so and now its even worse.

    my 2005 F-150 4x4 seems to disengage when in 4 wheel drive. it seems like it just kicks out when in use and it will kick in and out the whole time in use

First of all, the problem was caused by lack of use of the 4x4. The fix was to have someone sit in the seat & turn the switch while 2nd person tapped on 4x4 solenoid underneath the truck (next to the gearbox (seen from rear of truck) about directly below middle-rear-seat). It must have become stuck (or rusted) together? Little taps while engaging switch 'unfroze' it. My 2 fuses that were blown were probably caused by overloading when I first tried to use the 4x4 while it was frozen out. Since fixing, just be sure to turn it on (and off) frequently, even if you don't need it. You don't actually need to drive with it, just engage it temporarily.

Tap the selenoid on the transfer case while someone is in the truck working the 4x4 switch - it works... I replaced the Vacuum Selenoid on the firewall as well as the 4x4 relays for nothing, The transfer case selenoid was stuck. Ford wanted 700 bucks to fix it, with all the new parts I used it totaled 45 bucks, but all it need is a few taps with a rubber hammer. It's a Very Very simple fix...

I had the same prob. after about a month i decided to turn the vent to the off position then i switched into 4hi and it went .maybe its a reset of some sort or maybe just me.

Either the switch is bad or the motor that controls the switch some models also have a vacuum switch on top of the transfer case that gets stuck

4 high won't engage but 4 lo and 2wd work fine

Check for power to the front differential actuator. This actuator slides a gear in position to lock the differential to drive the front wheels. If you have power and ground to the actuator when in the 4HI position, the actuator has gone bad.The 4LO is only engaging at the transfer case, but the front wheels are still not engaged if it is not working in 4HI.

I have a 1998 f150 extended cab the 4 wheel drive will not engage

there is a plunger on your front axel that engages the front end, i had the same problem with mine, to get mine working i sprayed it down with pb blaster and worked it back and forth by hand, i had to do it a few times to get it working.

4wd front hub wont disengage

Possible the vacuum bleed-off to the switch you installed isn't allowing it to completely disengage. Pull the bleed-off line from the new switch and see if it works. could be just a tight spot/bent closed in the bleed-off line or the vent plugged.

Try another starter and also try turning the crank bolt with a ratchet and socket to make sure that the crank isn't frozen in place. Do not leave the keys in the car when doing so. You don't want anyone messing around in the truck when trying that!

Your stuck in 4x4 mode or it's only partially engaged. You need to have the transmission checked to see why this is sticking.

2004 Ford F-150 extended cab FX4. 4WD problem

The malfunctioning part in my case is what ford calls the "integrated wheel end" which locs the weel hub on the four wheel drive in or out as need. Part is available from Ford and cost about $110.00. I will do this repair myself.
