  1. P0171: This means that the oxygen sensor has detected a lean air-fuel ratio. This can be caused due to a vaccuum leak or a problem in the HO2S circuit or the HO2S (Heated Oxygen Sensor) itself. (Bank one Sensor one). This is commonly located along the exhaust pipe. It could also be a bad Mass Air Flow sensor or a bad Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. Diagnostic checks will be needed to be carried out to be verified though
  2. Well as for the other codes, it means #3&4 cylinders are misfiring. It is a possibility that the P0171 code mite have caused the others to show up. I can be wrong though. But it is a strong possibility. If the air fuel mixtue is too lean indeed, mis-firing will occur, unless it is an actual electronic and not a mechnical problem. By the way, when these codes appear, how is the engine's performance. Does it remain the same or behaves poorly?

Here are the possible causes for a PO171:

  • Base engine mechanical problem causing a lean A/F condition
  • Check for air leaks in the Air Induction system (e.g., in the intake manifold)
  • Check for air leaks in the exhaust manifold and in the exhaust pipes
  • Check for air leaks in the PCV system and in its related hoses and/or valve
  • Fuel control sensor is out of calibration (e.g., ECT, IAT or MAP)
  • Fuel delivery component fault (clogged filter, low fuel pressure)
  • HO2S has failed (it may be contaminated with fuel, silicone or water)
  • Vacuum hose is disconnected, broken, leaking or loose

p0171 is for a lean fuel condition .A variety of things can cause this code the most common one is a bad o2 sensor but a plugged injector,fuel filter or dirty egr system can cause this as well.

DTC P0171 - System Too Lean (Bank 1)
Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1.

Note: This DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) is very similar to P0174, and in fact your vehicle may show both codes at the same time.

I would suggest that you take a look at the front oxygen sensor. Typically speaking the oxygen sensor causes this code to appear. Here is the possible cause list from the manual for your car.

I have a gmc envoy & the trouble codes are p0107,p0130,p0135 & p0171 can you tell me what the problem can be.


P0107 Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Circuit Low Input

P0130 02 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank I Sensor 1)

P0135 02 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

P0171 System too Lean (Bank 1)

Check your Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor, and it might be a good time to install a new Upstream O2 Sensor.

It might also be beneficial to have your fuel pressure checked if the engine is really running Lean, but this may be caused by a faulty O2 sensor.

I have a 2003 3.0 engine Honda Accord that is giving me trouble codes P2197 P0154 P2254, what do these mean? Thank you.


Here it goes.
P2197 - Front Air Fuel Sensor (O2 sensor) Bank 2 - Sensor 1 Signal stuck lean.

P0154 - Front Air Fuel Sensor (O2 Sensor) Bank 2 - Sensor 1 Heater System Malfunction.

P2254 - Front AIr Fuel Sensor (O2 Sensor) VS Line high voltage.

IF Trouble codes P0134 or P0154 are present diagnose them before code P2254.

The first thing I would do would be check the heater circuit. You will have ground, and 12V+ to the 02 sensor heater line on a cold start. This heats up the oxygen quicker and allows it to operate in the correct amount of time. 9/10 times if there is a heater circuit code it is the oxygen sensor. But 1/10 times it is a blown fuse. So checking the voltage at the sensor is a quick test for P0154.

I would backprobe the signal line when the vehicle is at a full operating temp with a graphing meter (if avail) or use a DVOM. You should see it switch between .1 volts to 1V. It should not continuously move up and down. This indicates the computer is in good fuel control.

Diaginosis the heater circuit first is best because code P2197 can be set from anything that can cause that motor to run lean. (Plugged fuel filter, low fuel pressure/volume, vacume leak).
