1984 BMW 733i sometimes key starts up immediately but other times does not start but gives small zapping sound

WHen it does start, it runs fine, but sometimes it takes 5-19 minutes trurning the key in the ignition again and again before it catches.

I doubt that it's the starter. It seems to be in the key-insertion mechanism of the ignition.

Then your right! The word zapping sound. A starter description would of been a clinking noise. Yes you do require a ignition switch that the eletrical part of it. Best of luck to you

SOURCE: no spark on a 1984 BMW 733i 3.2 litre good

Have you checked for spark out of the spark plug wires and out of the coil wire? Also, I would recommend checking for battery voltage at the coil. If your crank sensor and engine electronics (DME) are ok, I would suspect the secondary ignition components. Also, don't rule out a bad rotor button or cap. Make sure you do not have any oil inside the distributor cap.

My 84 bmw 733i will start and run but engine dies as soon as i let go of the key

I had this exact symptom on my 1984 533i. I spent months diagnosing everything but the computer. It was the computer that failed. Actually only part of the circuitry failed and is probably repairable. When the car is cranking it would run. I set up a wire harness that allowed me to shut off the starter motor while I was holding the key in the starter motor position. The car ran just fine. The 533, 633 and 733 all use the computer ending with 008. DO NOT slap in any other computer unless you actually know what you are doing. I tried. And you risk damaging good components, like the donor computer and the injectors.
