Problem for Toyota 1997 Tercel
Tercel out of order
I own an automatic four cylinder Tercel. Yesterday as entered the freeway, I lost power and was forced to pull over about a mile from the entrance. Ther car was still on when I tried to put the car on reverse but it was not moving. I tried to put it on Drive and the same would happen within seconds. You can hear a sound of something in a spinning motion inside the hood on the driver's side. Did I blow out my transmission? Or can it be an electrical sensor? The engine light does not turn on and I checked the transmission oil.

Check the differential oil; it is seperate from the transmission oil; the fill plug is at the back of the trans, close to the firewall. My opinion, based on what you have told me so far is a failure in the differential unit, the ring & pinion area. If so, you are goiung to need a transmission. Sorry.

Tranny for sure if the engine sounds normal.. Look at wrecking yards for a replacement unless you want to spend big $$$$$.
