There is a fuel pressure test port on the top of the engine in the pipe that delivers fuel to the injectors. You will need to buy the special gauge that hooks to this test port. The test port looks like a large tire inflating valve and has a plastic cap on it. Autozone and others have these fuel pressure testers for about $20

Chevy 2001 Cavalier won't start

Trace the power source from fuse to relay etc and make sure pump is working. if all checks out then check pump working and for preasue at engine. you may have a dammaged fuel line from the tank which would also cause the same problem

I'm Ben and hopefully, I can provide some meaningful assistance'

Your problem suggests a problem with fuel delivery and is usually associated with a clogged fuel filter. That's a $10 fix.

However, I suggest that you have your local AutoZone run a free diagnostic scan and a check of the fuel pressure. This will determine whether or not there is something more serious, e.g., fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, mass air flow sensor, throttle position sensor, etc.

Don't hesitate because the problem will only get worse.

Please keep up to date since this is a problem that is occurring ever more frequently.

Its possible that you have ruined the fuel pump by running it low on gas. Since the fuel pump is cooled by the fuel in the tank it is important not to run them empty.

There are a few things you can do
1. Listen for the sound of the fuel pump running when you turn the key on. It should run for 3-5 seconds.
2. Check for fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge.
3. check for spark.
4. Always post an engine size when asking for automotive advice. This will help give better, more clear directions and what, where, and how to do the above mentioned.

If you can't here the fuel pump running or there is no fuel pressure than your pump is likely bad. A new pump and fuel filter should have you back up and running.

If you here the pump or you have fuel pressure and you don't have any spark than there are several things that can cause this. I can run through those with you once you know whether or not you have spark.

If you're missing fuel or spark or both let me know and I will help you further.

How can I replace the fuel filter in my chevrotet cavalier 2001?

The fuel filter is located on the fuel feed pipe, between the fuel pump and the fuel injectors.
  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Raise the vehicle.
  3. Use a back-up wrench in order to disconnect the fuel filter fitting.
  4. Disconnect the quick connect fitting from the fuel filter by squeezing the plastic tabs .
  5. Remove the fuel filter.
  6. Install new filter and make connections of fuel lines
  7. Check for fuel leaks after installation is complete.

My 2001 cavalier ran out of gas, and now it wont start after putting gas in the tank. the engine cranks but wont start. could it be the pump?

You will need to check the fuel pressure. You will have a connection on the fuel line to the motor under the hood. No fuel pressure indicates one of three problems. Fuse in fuse box, relay in relay box under the hood or fuel pump located in fuel tank.
