Question about 2000 Ford F250 Super Duty Crew Cabs

Trucks starts with keys in my pocket

Last thursday my truck would not start when it was cold. This past weekend I replaced the starter, relay and fully charged the battery. Now it starts without anything being turned on as soon as I connect the battery. I took it into the car alarm shop and they have completely taken that off. That was not th issue. What would cause the truck to start as soon as power is connected?

Everything was hooked up the exact same way as before. It did start to do it after we changed the starter.

We figured it out. We had a wire that was on the wrong prong on the relay. Easy fix. Just too much on the mind. Thanks guys.

When you replaced that starter are you sure you hooked up the ground wires and everything? (if there were any) you might have a ground off somewhere besides there also..

Won't start

so stop guessing, buy an $10 voltmeter (walfart has one)
and do simple tests. all very easy, ask.
the first step is jumper cable starts, ! cranks/ pass/fail??????
my guess, this fails.
if my car dont jump start, (i can coast start my car)
i check battery voltgage, alhhhhhh 12.6vdc, good. 10v bad.
i then hot wire the starter solenoid.
dead, (or clicks) , starter bad, big cables to it bad,(x2) or engine seized. (or battery bad, blow 10v cranking is bad battery 99%
i hand turn engine by hand, it dont turn, it's seized.
it turns by hand; good.!
so lets say the hot wire test works (keys in pocket cranks but dont start now , because my keys are in my pockets for safety)

that means the KEY LINE Is dead (small wire to starter solenoid)
see here. works for all cars. (not hacked key lines, etc.)

It could be the relay, But I don't think you have one, most starters are direct wired from the key to a solenoid on the starter, If there is a relay, it is the big fuse box under the hood, and is just a electric switch, not subject to cold. It sounds more like the terminals are filthy and the contacts are not connecting. Clean off all the wires with a wire brush and scrub the terminals with it, get underneath the connections too. Where the battery cables connect to the lead terminals, If I was up there I would be plugging in my car at night to keep it warm. It will start right up in the morning.

Good Evening, As long as you have good power and ground to the starter you should be fine, however what I would suggest first is pulling the starter relay and jumping 30 and 87 and see if the starter kicks over. If it does it means your trigger wire from the relay is good (might have to have the key on for the power to be on to the one leg but i do not believe so). If that works then I would suspect a ignition switch I have seen this happen before, one way to see is if you take your test light to where the relay is and take it out and one leg either 85 or 86 is going to be your switching from the key. If neither switches either power or ground when the switch is moved to the start position I would lean towards the ignition switch. Do the first test and go from there. Let me know if you need any more help.

A friend and I replaced mine this past weekend. The starter is located on the drivers side, next to the firewall down some, alittle hard to get to btu not to bad. It will take 2 people one to hold the starter and the other to unbolt the bolts.
You have to jack up the drivers side of the car to get at the bottom bolt.
There are 2 very long bolts that need to be removed.
Before you do that disconnect the battery negative cable and the cables on the starter.

You need to replace the relay or the ignition switch, check for power to the relay in the crank position,[pin 85 or 86] in the plug the relay was taken out of to see if the power to the relay goes away as soon as it is in the run position. If so replace the relay,if not, replace the ignition switch[not the key switch the switch the key switch turns].

Allternator works. battery has 12.6 volt charge. replaced started last weekend. my 98 contour still will not start. There is no clicking when trying to turn it over. Is there anything else that i can try?

Check your relays and starter fuses. These can be damaged by any work done to the car without disconnecting the battery first. especially starter work.
