Engine rebuilt 5200 miles ago, 3 oil changes since. noticed after the 6 mile ride home, engine hot (vent temp 140+) there was very little pressure in the radiator hose, took off cap. coolant was not too hot for me to put my finger in ( maybe 115-120)

Rebuilt... Total rebiuld or , like, just the Heads? The crank was cut and new , oversized Main Bearings? New Oil pump?

At 5200 miles, man you should have 30-40lbs at idle.

main bearings, cam bearings, oil pump , lifters, cam right down to the TBI gasket. I was not present for the whole rebuild, but I bought all of the parts. the block was cleaned, honed, freeze plugs & cam bearings nothing oversized needed as far as I was told.

A full rebuild. OK.. Except I'm suspicious that the Crank may have been worn and just using new bearings would still leave too much gap.. You can easily lose pressure right there.
Did the Builder Plasti-gauge the Clearance between Crank and new bearings? Was it in tolerance?

One other thing.. I heard of an issue with the distance in the distributor. Spacing between distributor and Block down by the oil passages. But that usually causing fluctuating pressure, not just dropped pressure. This problem happens on Small Blocks but I bet the issue still applies for your 2.8.

Thank you for all of your advice & insight. Led me to ask questions of rebuilder, he suggested I check sending unit, it was not replaced. It was leaking, (was not last summer). replaced it and pressure reads well 38# at N/O Temp. 68# cold...

    Well that's huge relief.
The price of a sending unit Beats tearing a fresh motor apart looking for a mystery.
    Cheers

SOURCE: Low Oil pressure light in idle at stop

Depending on the amount of miles, maintenance records, or how hard the car has been driven either by a previous owner, or by yourself. The engine's main crankshaft bearings or the connecting-rod bearings could be excessively worn.

Also, it could very well be a wiring problem to the sensor and/or computer causing the problem.

DOES IT HAVE A LOT OF MILES ON IT OR MAY BE THE OIL PUMP IS IS GOING OUT? THERE IS A SPRING IN THE PUMP THAT IS A BYPASS FOR HOW HIGH PSI IT MAY HAVE BROKE THAT WILL GIVE YOU LOW PSI.

The oil sending unit could be bad, or the pressure relief valve in the oil pump is malfunctioning.

HI you could do a oil pressure test whit a gauge or yest replace your oil pressure sending unite if engine is not making tapping sound when pressure reads low it may be a bad pressure switch.now the coolant problem may be bad intake gaskets look at 4 corners of intake for sign of coolant if you see it outside its probably getting inside your lifter valley.Hope this helpsb58809b.gif

I'd be checking to make sure that the oil pump was not the problem before I tried to replace it.

How many miles are on the engine? Have you tried to replace the oil pressure switch? is the engine making any type of noise due to low pressure reading?

Oil pressure drops with reduced rpm, after about 10 min of driving

OIl will get thinner as it warms up and since the oil pump speed is directly affected by the engine RPM's, a drop in pressure after the car reaches operating temp is normal. The question is what are the pressure readings "cold" and "hot" and are they within acceptable specs.

At idle the oil pump is not spinning that fast. When your cruising down the highway, the engine is turning a lot faster and therefore the pump is spinning faster. The faster the pump spins, the more pressure it will make to a point.

Since pressure and flow can be affected by the "weight" of the oil and the operating temperature of the engine, It's hard to make a diagnosis on the internet. You should take it to a repair facility that you trust and have them hook up a mecahnical oil pressure gauge and monitor the pressures cold and hot at idle and crusing RPM's. Then compare the readings with what Jeep says is acceptable.

Low oil pressures can be an indication of among other things worn bearings.

Changed intake manifold gaskets, and while doing so, spilled a bit of coolant that was left in the intake in with the oil. Changed the oil before I even started my truck, and since then, I will have oil...

It sounds like oil pressure switch is bad. You said you changed? To clarify, your oil pressure switch is also a safety item that shuts down ignition when oil pressure drops. Try an oil pressure gauge (hand held) to relieve your nerves about engine seizure. Make sure you're not getting to much fuel in engine also, that will dilute oil to a thin viscosity and show low oil press.

Low oil pressure 93 GMC P/U w/350 motor w/205,000 miles gauge

While engine is running, open the cover where you add oil to engine and see if you see a good flow of oil, if good flow, could be as easy as replacing oil sending sensor. got to realize that if poor maintenance history your engine may not be building enough pressure at iddle to move your hydraulic operated valves, only when you rev it up it will pump enough to run smooth. if running engine too long, you may cause more damage to other engine components such as crankshaft and cam shaft bearings. if you can spare a few bucks, have a good mechanic check your oil pressure with a mechanical gauge. another cheap option is to replace oil pump. last resort if you love your truck as much as we do,replace engine or rebuild it. At 205,000 this is a normal symptom, other than timing chain problems, most engines don't make it that far. hope this helps!

Either it one heck of a coincidence or the trans is somehow associated with or to the water temp.. The only way I know of is the transmission oil cooling. Ck the trans fluid level and onsider having the trans service.Oil change and filter and confirm or ask about the relationship of cooland and trans, if there is any. Good Luc and please let me know what you find out. Thanks Ned
