Bring #1 piston to top dead center(TDC). pull #1 spark plug to sit on top of the #1 piston by inserting long screwdriver into the hole. then check the cam to the other end of the motor. there slots on both cams that should be lined up together so that can lay the bar across the end of the head to be able to insert into the hole.
cam and crankshaft are lined up now to replace timing belt.
and Ztech motors are no real timing marks.

I have a 03 zx2 5 speed wont move just grinds but sometimes when u turn the wheel it will move only a couple of feet and wont lock into any gear when off i have too block the wheel any ideas

You have a busted differential. Been doing any burnouts in this car? If you are lucky, none of the chunks damaged anything else in the transmission and you'll only need to replace the side gears. Go to and search the Knowledge Base for a how-to for replacing the differential side gears. If you plan on racing the car or doing burnouts, this would be a good time to buy a MFactory **** for the car.

Zx2fast had great instructions on replacing the timeing belt when mine broke but now it idles ruf but it runs pretty good open road.... what can be the problem?????

You may need to reset the VCT mechanism. This isn't hard to do and instructions can be found on Just go to the Knowledge Base and then to the Service Items category. There you will find my how-to on the timing belt with the instructions on how to reset the VCT. You may also have new pending codes and you should have the computer scanned to see what they are. Another common cause of a bad idle on the ZX2 is the PCV elbows. They are very soft and can crack over time. You can get a whole new PCV line from Ford for around thirty bucks.

While driving my ford zx2 just died and now won't start . is it the starter or maybe the fuel pump

If the engine is turning over when you try to start it, then the starter is good. It could be any number of things, there isn't a lot of info to go on here. Check your timing belt, remove the upper dust cover. It is held in place by three 8mm bolts. If the belt is broken, also check for a broken idler pulley. The good news is that this is a non-interference engine. That means no valve damage if the belt broke. Every repair shop you go to will tell you otherwise, but they get their info from the same, wrong source. There is a timing how-to listed here and on

I have a 1998 ZX2 with 193,000 original miles. For four years it has had a turbo on it and I run 13's in the 1/4 mile at the local drag strip. So far, the engine is holding up just fine. Now, the transmission is a different story. But, if you aren't beating the car up every week at the drag strip or trying to destroy a set tires with a smokey burn-out, you won't have to worry about the transmission. A very good resource for Escorts is

Same, here - P0171. It is found in the website. It is under "common problems" and I am going to check the pvc valve and its pipe - which is most likely the culprit.
