Scanned the computer to know what fault code is stored there, could be a sensor or a electrical issue.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

The first thing you do is have the engine computer scanned for fault codes, based on the results you do the required diagnostics.

2004 Kia Rio O/D Off light is on. What is this? What does it mean. Can I drive the car.

your transmission overdrive gear is turned off. There should be a button on the shifter or console to turn it on. Overdrive provides better gas mileage on the highway. If you have more questions, please let me know.

Transmission problems

This is what my 04 Kia Rio is doing exactly. I was told that the TCM and Shift Solenoid "C" is faulty. Am trying to figure out how to go about fixing that without paying more than the car is worth. My tech checked with the local Kia dealership and the TCM new is I think around $700. You also have to buy the program to tell this high dollar part what to do and that is right at $100. I have found that sometimes if I let the car warm up and then keep hitting the overdrive button, eventually it starts shifting correctly.
