Question about 1997 Dodge Dakota

Open Question

Black box on top of the alternator

What is the black box on top of the alternator? My battery started running down while traveling recently. Lights began to dim, radio went off, but truck kept running. Volt-meter (amp meter?) went to almost zero. I stopped, found the alternator, and tapped on the black box on top of it. Power was immediately restored, volt-meter went to just over 14. Has happened twice more since then.

It's really the regulator board, and you may be able to get just a board. Check at you local auto parts house.

SOURCE: have 91 dodge dakota lights

Could be a number of things. Least expensive to more. Check the battery terminals and clean them. Have the alternator tested at an auto parts store. Replace the ECM. For some reason Chrysler executives in their infinite wisdom integrated the voltage regulator is inside of it. Under the hood on the passenger's fender. I hope I've helped. If so please rate my assistance and leave a comment to help others in a similar situation. Thank you and happy holidays. P.S. My money is on the ECM but the first two are wishful thinking.

SOURCE: lights and everything electrical goes

mikena959, It sounds like you need to have your alternator checked. One of the diodes could be working intermittently causing the problems you discribed here. You don't state here how long this problem lasts when it does happen. If it is not long then yes the battery will stayed charged. Good luck with this.

Battery not charging car is dead and will not start

Starting with the battery light, the warning light means the alternator is not charging the battery. It could be a faulty alternator, or a problem with the wiring between the battery and the alternator.
Normally you can drive a vehicle for several miles on the battery alone.
If you have charged the battery and it checks out ok, you would need to check the wiring from the battery to the alternator and to the fuse box for problems.

How do i know when my alternator is going bad

If the batt light is on, the alternator is not charging the battery.
If the battery won't hold a charge, it could be failing.

I had a routine tire rotation and car alignment on yesterday. As I drove my car later in the evening, the vsc/ecm dash light came on, followed by the brake and battery light, radio and dash lamp lights...

Sounds like you lost the charge from the alternator.
When the alternator quits charging your battery light comes on and your car will run on battery power only...and only for a short time.
As the battery gets its stored energy used up...everything that is electrical will get slow or dim.

I'd check your alternator for proper operation and its drive belt...

Hope this helps...

I have a question about a Kia Rio

I think you have a bad battery. The battery is a big capacitor. The alternator can't take large surges or power draw with a bad battery like turning on the lights. If the alternator wasn't working, the car would have died ans soon as you unhooked the battery. How old is the battery? Have the battery load tested.

1985 dodge powerwagon, lights went dim driving home now wont start, just replaced battery 6 months ago. starter clicked at first then nothing.

The alternator may not be charging the battery. Jump start it, and use a volt meter at the battery, red lead to positive and black to neg. The meter should read between 13 and almost 15 volts, any lower than 13 volts, the alternator is no good. (this is done with vehicle running).

Try a day time running light modual, these things are notorious for messing up,and since they are supposed to work when the car is charging it seems like the logical solution.

Bare or burned wire, most likely battery cable or alternator cable near exhaust system which might be making contact with a metal part somewhere, off and on, because of bumps, vibration, etc.

Dim dashboard lights and problem starting

Could be a loose or dirty battery connection, poor battery, or alternator. Check all the cables and connections to your starter. Clean your battery posts. Have your alternator and battery checked. It sounds like you are either running off just the battery or just the alternator. One of them is not right.

have the alternator checked for proper output.
Autozone will do it for free if you take the alternator off and take it to the store.
you were running the car on the battery until it drained all the power out of it.
