Speedometer on 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera not working

The most common causes are the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), a faulty speedometer, or an electrical issue. If it is the VSS then sometimes that will also trigger your check engine light to go in since the VSS talks to the ECM as well as the speedometer. If the ECM does not get the speed signal from the VSS then it thinks something could be wrong and bingo ... your check engine light goes on.
