Really??? Lifters are about the only thing that can make noise in this V6 valve train. A broken valve spring can cause noise but that would turn on the check engine light and the engine would misfire on that cylinder.

You could have carbon build up on the back of the valves that is bad enough that it could cause a noise like pre-ignition and if its bad enough it could cause a problem.it usually will cause the engine to sometimes run bad or have hard starting when the engine is cold as the carbon soaks up the gas until it can`t assorb any more.this can be possibly repaired by having a fuel system service that runs a chemical through the motor by use of a machine..it could also be bad valve guides or valve springs allowing the valve to not move up and down straight but on an angle.kind of like holding a pencil in your hand with some resitance and moving it up and down and then lossening your grip on the pencil and doing the same thing it won`t try to travel straight.

SOURCE: 1997 honda passport noisy lifters

You could try running a flush chemical in the engine oil just prior to changing the oil, and then using synthetic oil. This may free up the little tiny valve in the lifters and reduce the noise. At the very least, it will help prolong their life. It is a very big expensive job to change these because they are generally replaced as a set and they are not cheap, but replacement is often the only true fix.

How can u tell when a lifter has gone bad on a 3.0 ford v6

On most any car, a faulty lifter should be noisy and it would cause a valve not to open, which would kill that cylinder.

Rebuilt engine. when started again car ticks. timing marks aligned correctly, timing light shows 20 deg. what gives?

Most likely the hydraulic valve lifters, notoriously noisy in Mitsubishi engines. My 2007 Galant Ralliart Mivec 3.8 V6 with less than 15000 miles ticks also as did my 1989 Gallant and 1997 Eclipse.

My friend just got a 1988 ford ranger  v6 2.9L and has a valve tap and was wondering what different kind of ways he could fix this

if its an ohv type the most common fault is that the oil ways to the rocker shafts become blocked
so get some flushing oil drain the oil and replace with the flushing oil and run for the time stayed on the can then Change to good quality oil and new filter
then remove the rocker covers and check and adjust the valve clearances
if its an ohc type its all hydraulic adjustment
you could try flushing as above but apart from that the only other way is to change the lifters and followers
hope this helps
