Question about Suzuki Swift
It is a special electronic tool for reading the fault code in the memory of the control computer of your vehicle whenever you have a check engine light on. And no driving it with the light on is ok as long as it seems to run ok, a blinking CEL is a no drive.

A scan tool is used by a tech to find problems that the computer has detected or shows.one way is it will turn on the check engine light and set a code to help find the area to look for the problem and the other is a tech can look at the data that the computer sees while the engine is running or the car is being driven with the scan tool hooked up to the car.depending on what the problem is with the car it could cause a problem with the car if its driven without being checked into and repaired.often the problem is something that is considered easy to repair.have it looked into

SOURCE: I have a 1998 frontier
you need a scan tool ar CONSULT 2 that Nissan uses for their vehicles, but generic scan tool will work also. Retrieve code and post code. I am going to take a educated guess and tell you that you have a EVAP VERY SMALL LEAK or EVAP SMALL LEAK stored in your ECM/computer. Common codes on this truck, because of the gas tank leaking on top by sending unit. Did you have the Fuel sending unit campaign done?? and does the truck run fine?? 80%of the time is a EVAP system failure. Go to auto zone, they can retrieve code for you for FREE. Post code.

SOURCE: i have a 1997 chevy
I am about to purchase one myself. (Did not get one for Christmas like I asked for)
Look under the dash and see if you can find the connector. My 2002 S10 has the connector located there. From what I understand, the OBDII will work on 1996 and newer vehicles. I am looking at the Actron CP9179 scanner for the OBDII. It is about $181, but it has more features and options than the basic $29 dollar one which is very limited. If you just need to read codes, most auto parts stores will do that for you free (so they can sell you parts).
Hope that helps.
