Oxygen sensors are located in the exhaust pipe or manifold. Newer systems have two. One before the catalytic converter and one after. They give feedback to the computer with regards to the fuel-air ratio and the computer adjusts the system accordingly so that it runs right.

Oxygen sensors tell your engine if it needs more or less fuel to operate correctly, they are located in your exhaust system, one before the catalytic convertor and one after, if replacing yourself make sure exhaust is hot to ensure you do not strip out the threads

My 1998 oldsmobile silhouette sometimes just cuts off sitting in traffic, any ideas/solutions???

Here are 3 very common causes for an engine stalling.

1. Old air filter, ( if it's old it restricts the engine from getting vital air.)

2. Oxygen sensor, ( if this part is bad the computer is unable to determine the proper fuel/air mix ratio and often leads to stalling.)

3. MAF, ( mass airflow ), sensor. Similarly can cause bad fuel/air mix ratio, and often leads to stalling. This can also reach a point of causing your engine not to start, particularly in cold weather.

I hope this helps you.

My 2002 olds silhouette had a fault code for bank 1 oxygen sensor #2.So I changed the oxygen after the converter and the fault code is still there.I did un-hook the battery to clear the code.

Bank 1 sensors are all the o2 sensors before the converter. Bank 2 sensors are all after the converter. On bank 1 there is 1 for each side of the exhaust manifolds. Bank 1 sensor 1 is on the side ot the engine that #1 cylinder is on. Bank 1 sensor 2 is on the other side. On front wheel drive GM vehicles sensor 1 is in front,2 is in back, but stiil in front of catalytic converter.

Location of oxygen sensor unit on 2002 silhouette

Check the exhaust system first in the engine compartment area where the Manifold connects to the exhaust pipes then check under the vehicle just before the Catylatic converter and after. Some vehicles have 2 and upstream and down stream sensor. It is usually the upstream or the one closest to the engine that goes bad.

How to install a oxygen sensor on a 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette

There are usually two O2 sensors one on each side of the catalytic converter. Each has a wiring assemble and they are screwed into the exhaust system itself. You will need to have the engine exhaust cold as there is a risk of burn injury if it is not. Simply remove the old one usung the proper wrenches and disconnect the wiring at the connector. Reinstall the new sensor and reconnect the wiring at the connector. Make sure that the sensor is completely seated. If you have any questions please ask.

Where is Bank 1 Sensor 1 on an 2003 Oldsmobile Sillohuette?

"Bank one" is the bank of cylinders that starts with the #1 cylinder. In this case this will be the bank of three cylinders that is closest to the firewall. Sensor #1 refers to the O2 sensor that is between the engine and the catalytic converter. So the Bank 1, sensor 1, will be the O2 sensor that is mounted in the rear exhaust manifold or tubing just before the cat.
