Ignition timing I own a Golf II GTI 2.0 16V and my problem is the ignition timing. I have just installed the new flow meter, new plugs, new air filter, new fuel filter and a new oil filter. But the problem I am experiecinf is that the ignition is bad. when I start the car it takes time to catch on and when it finally starts it does not hold the iddling after three or four attempts it holds. I need to know how can I set the ignition timing myself.

Maybe the air flow meter it won't store a fault code because it still works within it parameters.

Engen problem and missing

Sir, your question is not very clear, but I will still try to post a solution here. Engine missing could be due to any problem in fuel system, ignition system, engine or ECM as well.

LOW ENGINE IDLE SPEED (Poor idling):
-Throttle body (do the cleaning and idle speed learning)
-A /C signal circuit
-Fuel pump control circuit
-Fuel pump
-Intake system
-P C V valve (clogged or open) and hose

ROUGH IDLING:
-Cylinder Compression
-Ignition system (Igniters, spark plugs, wiring harness)
-Spark plug fouled, gap too wide or too short. (1.00-1.1 mm)
-Fuel injector circuit
-E C M power source circuit
-Fuel pump control circuit
-Fuel pump (required pressure 44 psi - 49 psi)
-Throttle body (cleaning)
-Intake system
-P C V valve and hose
-Air fuel ratio sensor
-Heated oxygen s ens or
-Mass air flow meter
-Idle hunting
-Throttle body
-Intake system
-P C V valve and hose
-Air fuel ratio sensor
-Mass air flow meter

HESITATION/ POOR ACCELERATION:
-Fuel pump control circuit
-Fuel pump
-Spark plug
-Ignition system
-Fuel injector circuit
-E C M power source circuit
-Mass air flow meter
-Throttle body (do cleaning)
-Intake system
-Valve timing
-Cylinder Compression

97Vw golf gti car will not start it has new plugs new new cap and rotor new alternator new fuel pump but it wont start.... please help...

Although there are three requirements for a car to start; air fuel and fire. air is usually a given. We therefore check for fuel and spark.
fuel: You can spray some starting fuel into the a air/cleaner throttle body, if it starts momentary, then you probably have a fuel problem. if it do not start, then you probably have a problem with ignition/spark.

Hi, do u know what can be the cause of rev counter going up and down whilst idle? on a golf gti cheers

VWs are not well known to have idle issues however, a bad or stuck Idle Air Control valve, or a bad Mass Air Flow meter can cause this issue.

that timing is electronic-with age of car u probly need a tuneup--change plug wires and distributer cap--if that dont doit then mite need new ignition module--inspect for wiring flaws under hood--also consider fuel delivery system may hav issues

VW Golf engine rattle

You are experiencing detonation. Main causes are:

  • Low octane fuel - Use higher octane rating fuel.
  • Incorrect ignition timing - Readjust timing
  • Too high compression ratio(due to engine mods such as skimmed head or high compression pistons) - replace modified parts
  • Air/fuel mix too lean - Replace fuel filter and readjust.

Mk3 golf gti cuts out

Check for vacuum leaks.either use a propane blowtorch (switched on very low BUT WITH NO FLAME!)When the gas enters the leak the revs will increase... OR if you're not confident with this, use a spray water-bottle with water and some washing-up liqud. the bubbles will disappear where the leak is. The leak will be between the air meter and the head.
