The back of the drivers seat is too far back, almost touching rear seat. Motor runs when switch is engaged, but seat-back does not move.

My seat is fully reclined and will not return to the up right postion. The motor is turning but the seat does not move. How do I repair myself?

I tried the seat out, easily...the seat back motors (2) have an enclosed transfer case (gearbox) attached to it...I think the problem lies inside that case...I need special 'star' wrenches to get it apart...I took it to a local mechanic and he estimates $300-700 to repair!!!...if I can get a diagnosis then I can buy the parts on e-bay...can anyone tell me if they have experience with this problem and what to do to repair?

window is up, 1/4" from top. will not move up or down. no communication between switch and motor. does it need reprogramming?

Gears are probably not engaged. take the seat out, see if the motor drive gear is still within the teeth of the seat rail. if not, force it in. Easy to take out, 4 bolts and the seat comes up and out.

Passenger side seat stuck in recline 1996 328i bmw

This is either an electrical problem or the infamous twisted seat problem caused by the cables between the motors and reclining gear units of the power seat.
Check the connector under the front of the seat and make sure it has not been disconnected
listen to determine whether the motor at the front of the seat are turning when you try to move the seat (they are fairly quiet)
If the motor spins, then search internet for "bmw twisted seat"
good luck

The electric motor is located under the seat it may have shorted out. You would have to take the seat out to replace it.

I own a 1996 328i BMW, and the drivers automatic seat adjustment Tilt only goes back and will not come forward. Is this a simple fix or do I neede to replace the seat? I know if I go back any further with...

Very common problem. The white plastic gear in the tilt mechanism gets old and brittle and breaks.
BMW will want to sell you a whole gear box with motor. Aside from the outrageous cost, removing that gearbox is a pain. will sell you just the plastic gear for $40, and their website has wonderful instructions that show you how to replace it quickly and easily.
You will have to remove the seat from the car. Put some old socks over the tips of the seat rails that unbolt from the floor because the seat is rather heavy and awkward to handle, and the tips of those seat rails are very sharp and will cut up the interior and exterior of your car if they touch anything as you wrestle with the seat DAMHIK.
The other tip is to be careful not to over-tighten the screws that hold the cover on the gear box, They are not very strong and will twist in two easily. Again.. Don't ask...
Unrelated, but if the leather on your driver seat is shot, you can use the leather from a junk yard passenger seat to freshen up your driver seat. The seat bottom is replaced foam and all. Don't bother trying to save the plastic snaps, just pry the seat bottom up and put in new snaps. The leather on the seat back has to be removed from the seat and transferred, but it is not difficult.

I have a 1997 BMW 328i striaght 6 and the passengers front seat will not tilt up or back. the seat will move front to back. but the back of the seat will not move up and down.

this is a typical problem.. Either the individual motor that operates the back of the seat has gone bad or the bar that connects to the back rest has come off.

Drivers seat stuck in recline BMW 328i

Take the seat out and turn it over, to see if the gears are stripped, or if something simply became unattached.
It is needs expensive parts, consider a junk yard, or if really desperate, steal them from the passenger seat. Worst case, just lock it into one position that is best for you.
