Open Question

I want to bypass the rear air compressor and put air in my shocks to test them before I replace them.If they hold air Im only replacing the compressor. Any Idea how to air up the shocks??

Air suspension diagram for cadillac catera 1999. The leveling light is constantly on even when im parked. I;m trying to find a air suspension diagram to track the problem down.


this happened 2 me also because the rear air shocks were popped, they are very expensive 2 replace with factory parts, I found aftermarket air shocks for $80 but you need 2 fill them manually and disconnect the compressor . If you want 2 track the lines the compressor is behind the front bumper near the passenger side wheel well from there you can follow the lines 2 the shocks, meanwhile you should disconnect the air compressor it can burn out from running all the time. The factory shocks are close 2 $300 ea. with the aftermarket shocks there with be a valve stem 4 you 2 fill them with and are easy for a do it yourselfer

Where is the a.i.r. pump located



The air pump for the secondary air system (emission control device) is located under the battery. If you do replace it, replace the check valve too, it is on top of the exhaust manifold and connected to the pump with a hose. The check valve fails and ruins the pump. I think they are talking about the pump to provide vacuum to the climate control when the turbo is putting boost in the intake manifold. The vacuum can come from an electric pump or from an engine driven pump, something like an old engine driven fuel pump. I needed an electric pump for my 765T, and all the wrecking yards wanted to sell me the engine driven form. (A new one was $500, and it wasn't that important to me.)

An engine that takes the engine driven pump will have a hole in it while the others will not have a hole. Source(s): 35 years maintaining my own cars, including 17 years with a 1985 765T

Automatic Level Control System Operation Check
Support the rear wheels or support the rear lower control arms when certain tests require raising the vehicle on a hoist. Use two additional jack stands in order to support the rear lower control arms in the normal curb weight position when a frame type hoist is used. Refer to Trim Height Specifications in Suspension General Diagnosis.

Refer to ALC Suspension System Check for electrical troubleshooting of the Automatic Level Control (ALC) system, or if DTC's are present.

Diagnosing Leveling Complaints Without DTCs Present Procedure
Perform the following preliminary inspections before performing the system performance test:

Inspect the ignition (pin A & pin H) at the ALC sensor connector.
Ensure that the ignition (pin A & pin H) at the ALC sensor connector connection is secure.
Inspect the ground (pin E) at the ALC sensor connector.
Ensure that the ground (pin E) at the ALC sensor connector connection is secure.
Inspect the ALC sensor link.
Ensure that the ALC sensor link is properly secured to the actuator arm.
Inspect the ALC sensor actuator arm for damage.

there are 2 ways of fixing that problem you can replace whats broken which is more than likely the air bags, which is expensive, or you can get an aftermarket set up with regular springs and do away with the air bag system completely it's not hard to convert it over just unplug the compressor jack up the car to lift the weight off of the suspension put a jack under the rear end housing and loosen the the shocks and lower the rearend housing remove the air bags put springs in their place jack up the rear end bolt shocks back up and your done.

I have a 99 ford expedition i replaced the air compressor cause the front air shocks were bad and ruined the compressor. and teh rear air bags went flat now that the new compressor is in the rear wont air...


I have a 2001 Expedition, I don't have air bags in the front, the compressor don't work the air shocks. You have rear leveling. When they replaced the (compressor) did they turn the leveling switch back on. you may have air shocks connected to the compressor. Did the rear go down right after or over a couple of days. If the switch is on, turn it off and jack the rear up quiet a bit, make sure both side are quiet equal with each other, like it would be if it where raised by the air bags. Turn your level switch back on with it jacked up or sitting on stands. It may have went down so much that the compressor can't raise them back up.

2003 Olds Silhoutte Air Shocks and Compressor - not working


The load leveling shock will not work if there is an issue with the compressor. If you buy the sir shock's, your going to have to address the compressor issue to even have the air shocks level the Silhouette. Once you have the compressor issue addressed, the shocks it's self is simple enough to replace that you can do it with common tools to save you some money. My wife has a Montana and we had the same problem, since we do not tow and really never hold that much weight. We replaced the rear shocks with Monroe Reflex Shocks, Found the van to be much more sturdy then the air shocks ever were and the good thing about them is there were lift time replacement at Parts Source. Regardless on which shocks your going to use, it's a good rule to replace both sides at the same time. The only difference in to reinstalling the air shocks is you need to reattach the air lines to the shocks and that's simple as removing the shocks it self. The shocks are only held on by two bolts,  one on top and one on bottom and should only take about 20 min each side to do since you have to jack the car up and remove the wheel for room, but you can remove the shocks it self without removing the wheel, it's your preference. the camry has struts on the rear they have to be removed and put in a strut spring compressor to hold the spring then you can remove the top nut and replace the shock part of the strut

Rear Air Shock Problems


The car will still run level due to the fact the springs are holding them up. If the shocks are wet there internal seals are shot, so it is time to replace them.

ONE REAR AIR SHOCK IS LEAKING IN MY 2002 PONTIAC BONNEVILLE


you could replace the one shock but do you know why it is leaking oil? Typically unless there was something traumatic to happen to one of the rear shocks, then if one is going you can almost be the other one will go soon. I ended up having too many problems with the air ride suspensions. If you haven't yet, look into conversion kits as something to consider for down the road if nothing else. www.strutmasters.com has a great kit that is made in America and comes with a lifetime warranty. They have a good reputation and track record and can help you save some money and find the permanent solution if anything else goes wrong.

2004 yukon xl denali self-leveling rear air shocks


There's a lever that connects the driver-side rear shock to the Automatic Level Control module (the air compressor and the ride-height sensor). Disconnect the lever from the shock and rotate it up and hold it. The compressor should kick in when you hold in place after a few seconds. If it doesn't kick in, make sure your fuses and relays are good. Otherwise, you may have a failed ALC module/burned out air compressor (from the shocks being shot). After you replace the shocks (and after you recouped from the heart attack you had when you shelled out $500+ for each shock), replace the ALC module/compressor (it's all one unit), and test it - it should kick on when you rotate the lever up again.

Figure about $350 for the ALC module from your dealer, and make sure the part numbers match! Your truck came with an upgraded ALC module from the 2001-2004 module, which were prone to water damage.
