Sounds like the ABS (anti-lock brake system) is not functioning properly or could also be a sticky brake caliper..

My 2008 dodge avenger jerks when i come to a stop any idea what it could be.?

Jerks coming to a stop as in engine jerks, or does it seem like the brakes are jerking. When you leave off the pedal does it stop jerking? If it does it is probably warped rotors. A lot of new cars have this problem, my theory is that the brake pads they are using are way too hard. They put way too much heat into the rotor and warp it. Of course the rotors are none too heavy either. I think it is all in an effort to reduce weight in the vehicle.

You need to manually adjust the brakes after putting new brake shoes on. The automatic adjuster has adjusted for wear in the old shoes which will make the new shoes too tight.

Is the service engine light on? If so, take the vehicle to your local Auto Zone and ask them to check your Envoy for trouble codes, write the codes down and reply back to me.
Let me know.

you could have warped rotors wich the pads and abs system ride on if there barely warped it takes them a while to warm up and start grabbing also you can make sure the studs of the piston's arnt to tight or that the pistons or brake pads them selves arnt damaged

Brake hesitation

The initial push on the brake pedal doesn't provide full stopping power, it just depresses enough to assure you that, yes, you have hit the brake pedal, but now you have to hit it harder. Pressing down through this hesitation allows the brakes to catch fully.
