Doesn't happen all the time, just occasionally. Temperature and elevation do not matter. Dealer said to have the transmission flushed.

find the dipstick ,its their somewhere lurking and yes the transmission fluid goes down the same hole ,,,chock drive wheels handbrake on warm engine(running) with reverse selected to check trans oil level

I finally fixed mine, on my 1999 Subaru legacy 30th anniv edition. . .
I removed the speedometer head, and resoldered the green connector on the board. Then I also ran a wire to duplicate the trace wire from the middle pin to the first connect (about 4mm). Problem gone.
