P0705 - Trans Range Switch Circuit

Get under the truck and look where the trans shift linkage connects to the trans, there is a post that comes out of the trans, on that post u will see a large switch with multipile wires connected to it, that is the range selector switch, you need to remove the shift arm and a couple of bolts to remove the range switch, it is adjustable, u will see the slots, make sure u put the new switch in the same position as the old one or the truck may not start.

DTC P1744 is "TCC - Excessive Slip Detected During Full TCC Engagement". Which means that the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) is disengaged or the EPC pressure is at the minimum.

The most likely cause is a sticking or bad TCC solenoid inside the transmission. You can check the connector at the transmission to make sure it is clean and tight and that it is not damaged in any way.

If the TCC and wiring is okay, then pressure testing of the transmission will need to be done.

A new torque converter from Ford is about $265.00 and about 4 hours labor. Throw in a $40.00 TCC solenoid and I don't think it'll be more than $700.00 at worst.

If the pressure test is good then it's just going to be the $40.00 tcc solenoid and the cost of the transmission oil and filter changed which should be around $150.00

Good luck and hope it's just a loose wire harness to the solenoid which would cost $0.00 and just your time to locate the break in the wire. The other thing to, is to add a transmission fluid additive that would restore the clutch pack in the transmission and Torque Converter.

The purpose of the automatic transmission is to match the engine's optimum power and torque characteristics to the driver's desired rate of acceleration and speed by auto-selecting different gear ratios or 'speeds' to power the wheels. The Transmission Range Sensor (also referred to as the PRNDL input and/or neutral safety switch) tells the transmission control module (TCM) and the powertrain control module (PCM) that the transmission is in park, reverse, neutral, drive, low, 2nd, 3rd etc. It is attached directly to the manual valve of transmission, so when the shift lever is moved say from park to drive, the Transmission Range Sensor communicates this critical information to the above mentioned vehicle computer systems.

Many vehicles have a control module for the automatic transmission called a transmission control module (TCM). The engine control module (ECM) communicates with the TCM to monitor the automatic transmission for faults. If the TCM detects a fault in the automatic transmission and sets a transmission related fault code, the ECM is informed of this also and sets a P0700 in the ECM memory.

Now i dont know a lot about automatics especially modern ones with all this fancy electronics thats used nowdays but i think its a fault with the temperature sensor for the gearbox.But where its located and what it looks like i have no idea it could even be mounted inside the gearbox .Sorry not a very good answer from a mechanic but?? very few of our europeon cars come with auto transmission .Evan when i do know whats wrong i cannot buy the parts for the gearbox as only re-con boxes supplied by the dealer so best advice is to try a specialist in auto box repairs only .PS some of my best students when i used to teach mechanics many moons ago were the girls so no excuses like iam only a girl please

My service engine light is on got it checked it has a p0706 code which is the Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Range/Performance?where do i find the part?


DTC P0708 - Transmission Range Sensor Circuit High Input

Check your transmission range sensor.
There is a connector located where the cable attaches to the tranny on the back (firewall side). Be sure its connected and seated properly.

From what I understand the "range sensor" is basically the Input Turbine Speed Sensor. Be sure the connector for this is also clean. This code is also set by the Nuetral Safety switch. Check the switch with a multi meter to be sure its working properly.

Also, check your Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. This sensor is used by the PCM to help control tranny operations.

Also, can check this additional information for
1998 Saturn SL1...

DTC P0706
The PCM determines which gear is selected by a combination of opens and grounds in circuits 771, 772, and 773 at the transaxle park/neutral
position switch. Each combination indicates a specific selection on the
manual shift quadrant, P, R, N, D, 2, or 3. Circuit 776 is either open
or grounded to produce an even number of grounded circuits, 771, 772,
773, and 776. Invalid data indicates that the sum of the grounded
circuits 771, 772, 773, and 776, in 1 of the manual shift quadrants is
equal to an odd number.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
DTC P0706 is set when the PCM has detected an invalid bit pattern for
more than 3.5 seconds, twice per ignition cycle.

The difference between DTC P0706 and DTC P0705 is that a possible bit pattern error due to misadjustment could set a DTC P0706.

Test Description
1. This step verifies the conditions for DTC P0706 still exist.
2. If the shift cable or switch is misadjusted, a DTC P0706 may set
while in certain gear shift positions.
3. DTC P0706 may set due to 1 or more circuits being shorted to
ground. By disconnecting the switch, the PCM should read all circuits as high and the scan tool should display OPEN.
4. This step will isolate an open circuit. As each individual circuit
is grounded, the PCM/TCM should see the low signal and the tool should display INVALID.
5. The PCM/TCM supplies a 12 volt signal to each transaxle park/neutral position switch circuit. This step tests for that voltage.
6. DTC P0706 may have been set due to 1 of the circuits being shorted
to voltage. This step verifies if a short to voltage exists.

Repair Verification
Monitor DTC menu Code Status for Pass Since Code Clear and Pass This Ignition Cycle. When both have passed, the repair is verified.

Criteria for pass:
* No active DTC set.
* Two valid selector positions are decoded. You must move the
shifter to obtain a pass.

Diagnostic Aids
When the PCM detects a fault in the circuit, an open, ground, or short,
the PCM will open the circuit internally to protect the circuit.

If no circuit problems can be detected, check the shift cable and switch
adjustment.

Important
Refer to the chart from DTC P0705.

This DTC will cause the transaxle to start out in 2nd gear.
