Question about 1998 GMC Jimmy

I have a 1998 GMC Jimmy and i just put a new engine and transmission in and everything runs fine but the Console shifter will not shift out of Park....I can take the linkage off at the transmission and it will shift on the bottom of the Transmission but not in the Cab

There may be another nut along the line into the cab/ at the shifter that is diconnected or frozen, i had an old oldsmobile that i got stuck at the gas station cause the bolt came out. simple fix, but sucked doing it at the gas station lol

the tps is ususally at the side of the throttle body opposite where the throttle cable / tv cable mount.
sometimes it won't start, run, or run erratically. there are ways of testing this unit (by output voltage) before you commit to buying a new one. to test it you will need a dvom (digital volt ohm meter).

just a note: straight from the book... "a broken or loose tps can cause intermitten burst of fuel from the injector and an unstable idle because the ecm thinks the throttle is moving."

Your transmission is electronic, it read's the the speed sensor from the yoke and relay's the information to the ECM which tell's the servos in the transmission acivate to change the gears up or down with the engine out put.

I would try changing the fluid and filter again. Sounds to me like there is a lot of crud built up in it and another change would probably do the trick. It probably wouldn't hurt to add a bottle of Lucas Trans Fluid at the same time. It will help extend the life of your transmission. Black fluid would likely be clutch material that wears off over time.
If this doesn't work you are likely in the market for another trans. Hope this helps.

I have a 1998 GMC Jimmy I have been working on. All the sudden it won't shift out of gear, when I tried to start it all it does is make a quick clicking sound. Is the battery dead or what?


I am assuming you have a console shifter. If so, the shift linkage is jammed keeping it from going into park (which is where it has to be to start the truck). When in park and the brake pedal is depressed, the shifter is interlocked with the brake pedal via a switch/relay connected to the shifter with a linkage. Check the linkage to the shifter - it may be jamming the shifter.

I need to know the location of a neutral starter safety switch on a 2001 gmc jimmy 4.3 vortex


Column shift cars it will be at base on steering column I think. Floor shift cars it may be inside console at shifter. At some point this switch started being mounted on the driver's side of the transmission but not sure what year.

Your shift linkage at the transmission an the shifter has come loose.
check under the car and if not there remove the shift boot or console and check there.

You should just be able to hook it back up may need a new nut or cotter pin.
Make sure you move everything to neutral position when putting it back together.

1998 jimmy 4wd wont shift into 3rd gear 1st two gears are fine up and down shifting.


Fault in the gear box . This can be due to failure of the linkages, the shifters , the counter wheels or gears.
A fault in the gear box can be speculative and so unless the gear box is opened this cannot be confirmed.
You will need to decide if the job can be done with the tools and facility you have within your limits.

Check engine light blinking ( flashing ) indicates a severe engine misfire , a cataylic converter damaging misfire ! What code did you read .

Jimmy idles fine but shuts off when put into gear


Iwould look at a switch mounted on the side of the transmissiom called the interlock switch. Its on the drivers side and tells the VCM what mode the shifter is in and moves everytime the transmission is shifted so it is a ware part. Seeing that it runs in park and when shifted to a drive mode it dosn't It would be the first thing on my list to check can't say for sure with out looking at it but its vary likely

My 1998 jimmy wont go in to four high low works fine


i am assuming that you have the shift on the go in your truck. with the motor running, put the truck in neutral, and try shifting between the ranges. If you have a manual shift, make sure the bolts that hold the shift arm from the shifter and on the transfer case have not loosened up. You can pull the boot off the top of the shifter and see if the slot is lined up, if not check your bolts under the truck
