I can't tell if the Block has studs or bolts that should help keep the Alt. in place, this would be underneath the alt.

  • Kelly Truesdell Feb 24, 2012

I did check AutoZone, this exact pic, and the photo they use is nothing compared to what my motor looks like. I bought this 2 years ago from a VW mech. and it ran very nice, the alt. was brand new. As I encountered normal problems and maint. I noticed a lot of things were Mickey Moused. But still I can't tell if there were studs/bolts holding this thing in place..

  • Kelly Truesdell Feb 24, 2012

I have a 1985 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper. 105,000 on
At least one rebuilt stock motor.

  • Kelly Truesdell Feb 25, 2012

Yes I can see the top bar that has a bolt to the alt. this also allows for adjustments, I just can't find anything that shows or tells me it mounts underneath as well?

SOURCE: 1998 chrysler town & country 3.8l- how do i get

you dont have to take it off. remove the 2 15mm bolts and pry the bracket sideways w/ a prybar. This shortens your time. You most likely have a 90amp alternator so it should be small enough to slide through.

Batter wont charge, jeep idles for about a min then dies. Need to replace alternator, but dont know how

I have the same Jeep model 5.2L V8, to replace the alternator, check the next procedure...

Once the determination is made that the alternator is at fault, off vehicle testing can be used to determine the defective component inside the alternator.
See Figures 1 through 11
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the drive belt.
  3. If necessary, remove any splash shielding for easier access to the alternator.
zjlimited_482.jpg

Fig. 1: For easiest access to the alternator assembly, first remove the splash shield mounting fasteners ...

zjlimited_483.jpg

Fig. 2: ... then swing it out of the way for access to the alternator assembly

zjlimited_484.jpg

Fig. 3: View of the alternator electrical connections-(A) battery positive, (B) field terminals, (C) wire harness hold down, (D) ground terminal

  1. Tag and disengage the alternator wiring.
It may be necessary to remove the alternator and mounting bracket from the vehicle as an assembly.
  1. If equipped, remove the front alternator assembly mounting plate.

zjlimited_485.jpg

Fig. 4: Remove the six nuts and bolts that secure the front mounting plate to the alternator assembly

zjlimited_486.jpg

Fig. 5: Remove the front alternator assembly mounting plate from below the vehicle

  1. Unfasten the alternator mounting and pivot bolts and remove the alternator.
  2. If installing the original alternator assembly, push out the pivot bushing as illustrated.
zjlimited_487.jpg

Fig. 6: After removing the alternator assembly front mounting plate, remove the front engine-to-alternator bracket mounting stud

zjlimited_488.jpg

Fig. 7: Remove the two alternator bracket-to-engine mounting bolts

zjlimited_489.jpg

Fig. 8: Remove the alternator and mounting bracket assembly from the vehicle

To install:

  1. Mount the alternator to the brackets with the nuts and bolts. Tighten the two mounting bolts and nuts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  2. If the alternator and mounting bracket were removed as an assembly, install the assembly into the vehicle.
  3. If removed, install the front mounting plate.
  4. Engage the alternator electrical connections.
  5. If removed, install the splash shield.
  6. stall the drive belt and attach the negative battery cable.

Hope this helps (remember to rate and comment this answer).

Alternator

There are 2 bolts that hold the alternator in position. One bolt is near the top of the alternator, the other is near the bottom. The bottom bolt threads through the end of the ADJUSTMENT bolt (which is at a 90 degree angle to this mounting bolt, and faces threaded end w/ adjustment nut to alternator). Loosen 2 mounting bolts, adjust tension at adjustment nut (near alternator), tighten 2 mounting bolts (upper bolt 33 ft lbs, Lower mounting bolt 18 ft lbs). countrycurt0
