The majority of vehicles have a problem with a broken piece inside the shifter assembly. Check with your dealer about some recall or TSB there, if your VIN is included in this recall Mitsubishi will pay for the repair. If by chance yours is not included, then replacing the shifter assembly will fix this for you.
