Yes there is a problem with the thermostat, but it sound as if you have run it waaaay to hot. The head gasket will not deal with these kinds of temps very long. If it is past 3/4 you should NOT run it for any reason. Is there coolant in your oil? a milk shake like consistancy when checking the oil...? The t.stat is surely bad and is located on the driver side of the car, just follow the upper radiator hose.

If my 2004 Cavalier sits overnight and the temp gauge stays at 3/4 fo the way to hot, could it be the gauge or something else

More than likely it's the gauge but you don't say if it ever goes all the way down or all the way to hot. You don't say if the engine actually ever over heats, ie: loses water, steams, dies or anything like that. If the engine never actually overheats more than likely it's either the gauge or the sensor. You've got a 50/50 shot but I would put my money on a faulty gauge.

you might have to put in a lower temp.thermastat so like if it has a 195 put in like 180 or whatever you can get that is cooler than whats in it and it should say the temp.right on the old thermastat.Call a parts house and ask them what temp ranges of thermastats they have for your year make and model of car.
