So you were driving when it got stuck? Were you able to keep driving but only in third? And did you hear any noises?
There is a cable that runs from the shifter to a shift lever on the back of the transmission. It connects just below and to the left of of the air filter housing. Look and see if the anything is damaged, or broken off. If that linkage is jammed or broken you wouldnt be able to move the gearshift.
If you check out the linkage and dont see any problems, detach the cable from the shift lever. Then try moving the shift lever by hand. I can tell you exactly how to detach it if you need. I will have to go look at the cable on my car to remember how to remove it. I have a 1992 Tercel, should be the same as yours.
Thats the best case scenario. Worst case, transmission is bad.
When you push the clutch pedal, does it feel normal?
Most fills on front wheel drives is through a small opening through the transmission dipstick tube. Using a small funnel, fill partially, start car and run through all gears one at a time, then check fluid level and add, then run through gears again until the proper level has been attained. That's the easiest way. Standard transmission are through the fill cap/dipstick combo as well.
have you checked the fluid gear oil itself 1st hmmm would you elaborate on this for me is the linkage connected and have you done any work to the said vehicle prior or just one day woke up and this is the issue
