Fuel Pump Need to change the fuel pump. Is it necessary to drop the tank in order to change the pump?

    Thanks alicantecole,

On this model I would have had to drop the tank. I could have taken a chance at the easy under the seat solution and taken off half a day of work then have it turn into the drop the tank solution. Then maybe lose a whole day or more. Took it to a mechanic and he said he had to drop the tank and had a hard time getting the pump out. Don't know, wasn't there to observe. Bottom line, I love fixing my own stuff, (usually do a better job than the guy whose got 6 or 7 other jobs going at the same time), but had to weigh the economics.

This is a great site especially for volvos since off the shelf service manuals aren't as helpful as for GM, Ford, Jeep etc. Also after market parts are expensive and hard to find locally.

    Thaks again

It is not necessary to drop the tank. In the boot, on the left, you can see a cover towards the back seat. The carpet cover need to be removed first. Unscrew the four nuts and you can see the all the hoses connected. You need the special tool to unscrew the black plastic cap. The pump is attached to the floater. Ensure that before fixing to check the plastic head at the vacuum return head is not crack and replacement is needed for new rubber seal on tightening the black plastic cap. After all done, check on possible fumes leakage.

The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank. The fuel tank has to be disconnected and dropped down from the underside of the Jeep, in order to access and change the fuel pump assembly.

Do you have to drain and drop the fuel tank on a 2005 Nissan Altima in order to change the fuel pump? Also where are the crankshaft sensor and the fuel pump relay located. Thank you for your help.

yes you have to drop tank to replace fuel pump and filter as it is one unit pretty easy though.

crankshaft sensor is either under the harmonic balancer pully or bolted to block facing it you normally have to pull pully to change sensor but some you dont you will need a puller and a installer if you have to pull the pully

relay should be under the hood in relay area

if this was helpful please give me a good rating

Hello hakunaracing: My name is Roger and I will help. The fuel pump is located inside of the fuel tank. You must drop the fuel tank in order to change the pump. once you drop the tank you must remove the lock ring. once removed lift up the sendor unitand remove from the tank. You will need to rotate the pump to remove from the tank. Remove the pump and strainer. The strainer will pop off with the help of a tug or pry with a screw driver. Replace the pump and install a new strainer. Also be sure to replace the fuel filter. Do this to make sure you do not void the pump warranty. Reinstall pump unit in the tank. reinstall tank to car. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer. This is how I know it was helpful. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

How to replace fuel pump

Empty fuel tank, support fuel tank, remove straps from tank (you'll probably have to replace those). Remove fuel filler neck from inside fuel door or at tank, drop tank, remove wire clips and fuel lines as necessary, remove fuel pump, put new pump in. Installation is reverse.

Fuel pump access panel..

you do have to drop the tank, it is not that hard of a process, once you have it down, there will be a ring that you will need to turn, it will loosen the fuel pump, undo the wires and replace. Be carefull when you pull out the pump it will have the float attached that goes to the fuel gauge.
