Noise seeming to come from the belts

I checked the pulleys and the belts and they don't seem to be loose.  My van makes a noise that sounds like air trying to get somewhere.  I know nothing about cars and all I can explain the sound as is a whoosh/wrrrrr.  I know that is  lame.  It makes the noise when I start it up and sometimes it does go away and sometimes it doesn't. thanks

No I haven't yet.  I get paid this week and that van is getting a tune up.  I guess I'll have to add that on too.  Will it last 5 days you think?

  • lisalma68 Oct 27, 2008

The belts are not all chewed up or anything.  I'll have someone look underneath too. Thank you!

Ok I will do that. Thanks again.

The rule of thumb is first to replace belts and check bearings and idlers and tensioner.
have you done this yet?

I seem to have a vacuum leak (high pitch noise)when the car is cold. I thought it was a belt related noise, but everything has been replaced and the noise is still there.

Sometimes the transmission makes that noise when it's low on oil. Check the oil level....that could be the noise.
Hope this helps.

Tps on nissan quest makes loud noise when accelerates

As I look at your letter, which is very good, I might add, here are the few things that occurred to me.
The "loud squealing" should be a belt.
You have one or several belts, and if they get loose, or are worn out ( that includes the belt rubber getting old and hard) they will squeal like that.
However, the squealing also may be coming from one of the pulleys the drive belt or belts are attempting to turn.
If you have a bad bearing in one of the pulleys, you can get that loud sound like " a train".
If you are really careful, a "mechanic's stethoscope" might help you.
That is to take a really long screwdriver, and put the tip on each of the pumps or base of each pulley, and the handle end to your ear, and you can hear the bad bearing "scream" with the engine running.
Be blessed.

Why would the belt to my van keep shredding or popping off

check all of your pulleys (a/c, idler pulley, water pump, etc...), make sure they all turn by hand and don't seem loose. sounds like you might have one locked up or sticking really badly.

I put on a new fan belt and it makes a squeaking noise after just a few months....why is this......the engine is a 4.3 L G20 chevy van 1994 without AC

Could be a pulley making the noise. Could be your choice of belts. I have had good luck with the Goodyear Gator Back belts. And I don't care if someone says their store brand is made by Goodyear. They may be what Goodyear throws away and the store goes dumpster diving for them.

Its harder to do on a van but what you can try if you don't have an automotive stethescope is hold a piece of hose to your ear and the other end around the pulleys to help you narrow down where the noise comes from..

I just changed my serpentine belt on my 2002 Buick LeSabre. (The old one split in half). Everything seems to be lined up properly but when I started the car to check the alignment, I heard a loud...

remove the belt and check all the pulleys that the belt drives. sound as if one of the bearings in the pulley is seized making the belt squeal and smoke.

Chirping noise on a S320CDI/2008 when accelerating

It may be a bad serpentine belt or pulley or may be a bad bearing on an alternator or water pump or even a power steering pump or tensioner. Here is my suggestion when this noise is hear with vehicle running pour/spary belts with water and see if this noise get louder or goes away. If it does either then the belt is worn and replacing it will solve this problem. If there is NO difference then you will have to disconnect the belt and check each pulley individually to see which one is make this noise, this can be done by turning the pulley by hand. when it found replace that pully/part will fix the problem. Good luck and thanks for using FIX YA

High pitch whistling noise in engine compartment of 2005 envoy

There may be a small hole or cut in a vacum line or possibly just loose. Also make sure the air filter box and the big hose to it are secure and clamps etc are tight. Pulleys and belts can make a high pitch sound also.

1992 bonneville transmisson won't engage

not likely possibly the cover for torque converter may be loose. if rattling coming from pass. side may be belt tensioner/or water pump. to check shut engine off remove serp. belt check water pump pulley for play by wiggling back an forth do same with belt tensioner. check trans fluid level while on level surface engine warm&running tranny in park. some gm cars have had problems with crank shaft pulleys making rattling noise also.
