First of all, don't "disable" the thermostat, It is an important part of the cooling system. Without it, you could crack the cylinder head from coolant boil-over! Ok, the most obvious sign of a cracked/warped head, or gasket failure is white smoke at the tail pipe, air bubbles in the cooling resivoir, milky, thick, coffee with cream colored oil, or external coolant leaks. If you just have an overheating problem, you should investigate the cooling system first. Check the fan(s), there may be a belt driven and an electric fan for your truck, make sure they both are operating. (turn the ac on with the engine warmed up) Check that when at operating temperature, shut the engine off and make sure the belt driven fan has resistance when you turn it by hand. If it turns and spins freely, replace it. Flush your radiator with a good coolant flush chemical and follow the directions. When flushing, look for water flow in the radiator cap. Replace that thermostat with a new one! replace the coolant cap also. Check for debris on the radiator fins like leaves, plastic bags, mud and bugs.

What can cause my engine to overheat driving normal condition?

Hi there:
What about fan relay? Are you losing coolant? Did they check the coolant for signs of a head crack or a gasket failure? (I think they do some chemical analysis to detect exhaust components when no bubbles are evident, you used to be able to buy kits at auto parts stores). A leaking head gasket or cracked head could give you the symptoms you describe.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

Vehicle overheating quickly. changed thermostat it ran fine for about 2 weeks, now it is overheating quickly again. no leaks are coming from water pump. Do not see any water leaking anywhere, but when it...

Hi, check you have heat coming out the heater in the car put it on hottest setting and see what happens if it comes out cold then the chances are the head gasket has gone and is pushing gasses into the coolant system causing an air lock and then over heating.

check the oil for signs of a white substance look on the oil level stick and also inside the oil filler cap if their is any signs of milky substance then this is proof head gasket has gone.

let me know what you find out ok

Head gaskets

There is really no difference between a blown or cracked head gasket. In either case the gasket would have to be replaced. Generally the term "cracked" is used when referring specifically to the cylinder head/s its/them selves. If the cylinder head is cracked it is a much more expensive repair.
