Question about 1989 Dodge Raider

1 Answer

Automatic, V-6, ideal RPM at 70 MPH?

I just purchased a really great 1989 Dodge Raider (V-6, automatic). I was driving down the highway when the check engine light came on. I noticed it was running at almost 4,000 RPM while I was at 70 MPH. Just wanted to know if that sounded to be in the "normal" range. I was planning on going to my mechanic next week to give the car a once over, but I wanted to know if I should stop driving it in the meantime.

Sounds like the transmission is not shifting into a higher gear. 2,500 to 3,000 rpm would be more realistic for a highway cruising speed. The higher rpm may not be a big deal as far as the engine is concerned but it will hit you pocket book pretty good when you loose the mpg that you should get. I would personally either limit your driving until it can be checked or at least slow down so that the RPMs are in the range listed above. Let me know what they find, my curiosity is peaked!

SOURCE: 2001 grand caravan high rpm at 70 mph

It sounds like the last gear in your transmission may not be engaging. Caravans are actually famous for tranny problems. Furthermore, be sure to check your transmission fluid while your vehicle is idling. That ensures accuracy. But you may have to get someone to physically look at it to ensure your problem gets solved. Kind of risky diagnosing something so big through typing.

Standard Shift? Clutch is Slipping

Automatic? It is coming out of gear or slipping

If it is an automatic-- you most likely will end
up having to rebuild it,if it is original since built for yr 2000

What is the o/d button on top of automatic gear stick for please

Over Drive..... Generally speaking, overdrive (OD) is the highest gear in the transmission. Overdrive allows the engine to operate at a lower rpm for a given road speed. This allows the vehicle to achieve better fuel efficiency, and often quieter operation on the highway. When it is switched on, an automatic transmission can shift into overdrive mode after a certain speed is reached (usually 70+ km/h [43+ mph] depending on the load). When it is off, the automatic transmission shifting is limited to the lower gears. For an automatic transmission, it is almost always best to select overdrive and allow the transmission to control engagement of the overdrive. (It may be necessary to switch it off if the vehicle is being operated in a mountainous area or when towing a trailer.) With a manual transmission, overdrive should usually be selected when the average speed is above 70 km/h (approx. 43 mph).

Transmission shifts early (Is this normal?)

the reason it might be shifting so early is because of the gear ratio in the rear end of the truck. it is common in the 2 wheel drive basic model pickup because they were designed to work not travel.

Stick shift # Automatic RPM

That is normal,If you do the same speed in 4th gear the rpm's will almost double.

The rpm's will repond faster in a manual than an automatic.

In a manual the engine supplies the power required directly to the gear that you have selected thus the engine rpm's will increase or decrease as needed.
